I haven't bought Topps Now in a while but will today. Last time I bought I got a parallel and was surprised to see that it was in addition to any base cards you bought. Today's sale explicitly says parallels are gonna replace the base cards. Tiny nit, but obviously having the parallel is way better anyway. Almost forgot that I had this one. I didn't like the blue when I got it, but I like it now.

I said it a few pages ago. I don't see Ohtani attempting this many steals if he's pitching. You need those legs for pitching.

Very true I have a modest collection of both but nothing extravagant as I sold my only Ohtani autograph and my Judge cards are staying in my collection.

how much was it back then, if you don't mind?

so tempted to buy a handful of the topps now card, but will probably get it on ebay, since it's not really worth the $6 for a 1:100k chance at an auto right?

20 years from now they're going to uncover warehouses full of these Topps Now cards from breakers.

We all have mental caps on what we are individually willing to pay for a single card. As my cap has gone up over the years I've learned that once a cap is pushed through a whole new world of beautiful cards is opened up to me and I strive to keep upping that mental price cap, and I become willing to part with cards to push that cap that I never thought I'd part with. My impression of your collecting style is that you have an inordinately low price cap on singles purchases based on your overall spend. This is what all your friends on this board are trying to put their finger on, as it's all of our assumptions that once you break your mental price cap your joy in collecting will also increase which is basically what all here hope for above all else.

You are correct! I have a mental block I need to get over. The most I have paid for a single Ohtani card is $350. I bought a 2018 topps chrome xfractor at that price. At the same time I have like 600 Ohtani RC cards. As I said before I appreciate and acknowledge the better route to collect Ohtani is to be in high end RC and autos. My definition of high end is $1000 or more...with most being much more.

This off season I plan on picking up a few SSP Ohtani RC cards that are high end.

Shohei Ohtani is a starting pitcher. He had surgery on his pitching elbow. He's been rehabbing it all year.

This year he was a dh. A few years ago he wouldn't of been able to play at all be because there was no dh in the nl. Even when healthy he doesn't play the field anymore. What he did was amazing but acunas 2023 is more impressive.

Great point, I also wonder why Shane Bieber hasn't been playing the field while rehabbing elbow surgery.

Throw in the new rules, and he has already attempted 55 SB with a 93% SB rate. Wait, prior to the rule changes, he attempted a total of 93 steals in 5 seasons at a 71% clip.

Just saying, if Griffey, or Arod had these rules back in the 90's, 50/50 would have already been accomplished. If Ohtani can more than double his attempts in 1 year from 2023 to 2024, have Griffey or Arod 2X +their attempts and it's done.

Props to Ohtani for doing it, but not that impressive given the new rules. He's a beast at the plate, not saying otherwise, but his SB numbers, meh. As others have mentioned, hard to compare different eras, but it's obviously much, much easier for players to steal nowadays.

Maybe he reads Blowout and sees how dumb most are diminishing his value as a DH and wanted to prove them wrong?
