I know there are some that are not crazy about the Crusade insert, but I am a fan and appreciate it's longevity as an insert. gotta love red on red...

Honestly, I’ve never been crazy about the Crusades. But you don’t see them pop up very often so I wanted it when I saw it. And they look much better in person than I expected.

A pretty big NT just popped up on eBay with a somewhat reasonable starting ask.
3-color BGS 9.0 for $270k obo. The $270k ask for that grade is still high, but if the seller is willing to come down off of it a ways it might end up at a price where someone would pick it up.

Kind of off topic but related to Patty:
I was talking with some guys in my fantasy league and they think Patty is in for a big year offensively because the Chiefs defense will be less than stellar this year and the Chiefs will be in high scoring games all year. Thoughts from the Chiefs diehards and those with inside knowledge is appreciated. |

Jarren Reed was a big pickup at Dtackle, which has allowed Chris Jones to move to D end. 2nd round pick Nick Bolton is currently starting at linebacker in 3 linebacker sets. The secondary seems to be shifting some pieces around Honey Badger. All in all I would expect a similar defense as prior years.

I know this is borderline craziness.....especially as a KC Chiefs fan living in KC....but have any of you thought that maybe you have too much invested in Mahomes?
I've sold off a few Mahomes' rookies and gotten some baseball stuff...but then afterwards I think to myself "I'm an idiot..." What say you all?

Sports cards are NOT an investment...you want an investment...buy a block of flats and get the passive income and associated taxation benefits. No banks are lending against a Mahomes rookie. Number 2 Refer to number one again and absorb the last three words of your last sentence.....there you will get your answer.... ![]() |

this is a very tough question to answer: I'm like you, bought in relatively cheap and have amassed a nice collection. As Patty's values have climbed, I've thought about selling (some, not all) and investing in Brady, (who I think is still undervalued) Do I think Patty is overpriced? Hell yes. Do I think these prices can sustain or keep going up? I have no clue. My advice. You can't predict the market: It doesn't matter what you or I think. If I had to guess, I would say his values will continue to climb unless there is a significant injury. Edit: and your not an idiot if you bought in cheap and sold at a nice profit. I never beat myself up about that. |

Sports cards have been THE BEST investment I've ever made. I worked at a government job and put in 5% or whatever into my retirement for 12 years. That account has something like 85k in it after 12 years. I have a million dollar card portfolio that started with 5k. I have cards that double or triple in value every single year and people are stoked to get 10% return on apartments? Investment is relative. There are incredibly safe investments in this hobby even right now that will yield you way better than 10%. There are also high risk speculations (like investing in start ups). Mahomes is in that category. But every time I think about buying something else, my Mahomes just keep going up and up and up. I am about 80% invested in Mahomes. Not wise by traditional standards. High risk, high reward. But am I investing in Herbert? lol hell no. Burrow? Allen? Mahomes is THE guy. I only regret not buying Brady the last 2 years. Nothing is guaranteed, but investing in sports cards (using my experience) has been the safest and most lucrative investment I've ever made. And I have a terrible salary with no retirement or health benefits from my job (by my own choice), so the stakes are high lol! Last edited by pejc300; 08-17-2021 at 12:41 PM. |

The majority of the value in my collection is in: -Brady -Mahomes -LeBron -Giannis -Luka/Trae via wax To me, that's a great hedge. Split my value between the legit GOATs of today and the guys who look to take up the thrown once they are gone.

It’s certainly not crazy to think about diversifying.
Same as E*TRADE where you make a speculative play on TESLA 5 years ago. All of a sudden 95% of your eggs are in one basket. Risky. I’m 80% Mahomes, and the rest mixed bag is Allen, Jordan, Gretzky/Ovechkin. BUT, I also have my 401k doing amazing just like everyone else’s. Still in my 30s and it’s quite healthy. I also have 6 properties cash flowing. So when I look at my entire portfolio, Mahomes isn’t weighted as heavy as the 80%, it just looks that way when you look at my sports card sector. Therefore, no need to sell really. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

nice work! The hardest thing for me is knowing what the right "mix" of those players should be. To me, Brady and Lebron are absolute no brainers. I think Patty could be there one day, but I feel like he's overpriced in comparison to what he's done. But again: what do I know? |

If it was strictly a money play - probably not going to lose any of your initial investment if you sold now. If it was the latter.....why not hold? You see people around KC, you hear radio/tv and other social media - EVERYONE, literally EVERYONE talks about PM or any of the multiple companies that he has become a part of while in KC. He has invested in the community and IMO will be relevant in KC forever. Just think...in a few months anyone who visit's a Whataburger in KC, Wichita, St. Joseph and so on will have PM to thank. Just my .02

Obviously a diversity of opinions on this matter and some great perspectives above from other posters. It’s really hard to weigh in intelligently on your particular situation, as it really depends on how diversified you are outside of sports cards with respect to your total portfolio, income level, and job security. If sports cards are your primary investment vehicle, and Mahomes makes up a lion share of that portfolio, you probably are skating a little too close to the sun. However, if you’ve got a steady job with a good income and a relatively diversified investment portfolio, you can probably afford to be more concentrated in Mahomes. Mahomes definitely makes up the largest percentage of my sports card portfolio, though my card collection is a relatively small percentage of my overall portfolio. Sports cards have also been my best performing Investment over the last 4 years and it’s not even close. However, I have not sold one card in my life, so my gains are all on paper… I just love to collect cards and am a Kansas City homer. In addition to being cathartic, it is also a great bonding activity with my kids. I’m playing the long game with Mahomes and understand the risks associated with it. I may sell a couple things here and there to consolidate the collection and upgrade to some higher quality RC‘s over time outside of Brady, Gretzky, Lebron and Jordan, I have never seen a professional athlete as dominant in their sport as Mahomes. I’m sure people have taken notice, but the guy is literally building an empire around him. He is now a part owner of the Royals, sporting KC, 30 Whataburger franchises, and is launching a new line of shoes. Between these investments and his endorsement deals, he will be financially set for life, regardless of what happens in his football career. I believe Mahomes will give the Chiefs the financial flexibility to field a contender year in and year out during his career, just like Tom Brady did with the patriots and bucs. He aspires to greatness and wants to be a legend of the game. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Thanks all for the input! Love it and love y'all!
Initially after getting back into cards, I was very heavy into Mahomes and still have some nice cards of his for sure. I sold some duplicates and other rookies that I had forgotten I had and used that money to get into Trout and Soto etc. I'm kind of diversified I guess between: Ichiro, Mahomes, Soto, Zion and Trout. I hope Mahomes has another SB Champ year...we're about to find out!
