I keep reading Story is pretty determined to only going somewhere he’ll be the SS. Would Xander move to second to make it happen? I’m not opposed to Story on a reasonable 2-3 year deal. They still need to add a couple of arms if they plan on competing this year.

Yeah for the most part, but I think AC plays JBJ in Right and Kike in Center.

If they offer a long term deal to Story it likely means that they’ll move Xander.

Still don’t get why as Xander has been a top 5 SS year in year out.

I literally siiiighed when I saw the alert - not sure that’s supposed to be the reaction when your team signs a free agent to a huge deal…

What makes you say this? Devers 3B, Xander SS, Story 2B, and ??? Upgrade at 1B = perhaps best infield in MLB. At least challenges Toronto for that distinction…

If that’s the plan, then great.

Alternatively, I see them using this as an excuse to move/not resign Xander, which would really piss me off…

I think Story made it clear it was more important to be on a championship team than where he plays on the infield. It reminds me of A-rod who was fine moving to 3B to join the Yankees, even though he would have been an upgrade over Jeter defensively. He was just happy to be on a winning team after the Rangers and M’s

So he can opt out after year 4, but the red sox can say no and that triggers a new deal that is different?

To me it's an admission of that the Betts deal was a failure, clearly Jeter Downs isn't MLB ready if you need to sign Story and move Xander to 2nd. Per Mazz (98.5) Xander has an option to Opt. out in 2022, with the draft of Marcelo and signing of Story it's unlikely he'll stay. Unless they convince him to move to DH, which I think would better suit Devers.

This move still doesn't address the two biggest holes on the roster with SP & 1B.

I doubt Xander goes to 2B. I think that’s where Story goes
