Got a Black Cat Hidden Gems from a break. So far haven't seen any other listed, hopefully they are more rare in Marvel than in baseball.

They are pretty rare in baseball, given relative production of the overall product, so rarer would be pretty much 5-10 on the pr.

Finally had to buy in this morning after sitting on the sidelines all week watching people pull some amazing cards. Bought what was left of a pack out, the last box they had, and hit this among 4 other nice #'d cards. It was in a pack all by itself -

50 Years of Nightcrawler Red Wave /5 Shadowbox case hit

I guess Fanatics is beginning the 10x-ing of the nonsports hobby. Wonder if any of this buzz will generate interest in the older UD Marvel stuff or if it’s just confined to the breaker movement which tends to just be drawn to the shiny and new.

Are people seeing renewed interest in the 2024 Topps UK Marvel stuff now? That seems to be the closest parallel.

I went to Walmart today and they didn’t have these blasters but they did still have some of the leftover UD Marvel Blasters (beginnings, annual, and the weird MCU set they dropped toward the end).

It would generate buzz IF these people opening this were actually collecting this stuff. The people buying up singles for pennies on the dollar probably already have the stuff from the Upper Deck days.

I am not that plugged in to the Marvel card market. I am in the Star Wars though. I used to buy and get excited about Star Wars releases. Masterworks, Galactic files, Chrome. Now there is those sets and a handful of others. All with pretty much the same base checklist. The problem you run into is that you run into the same stock photos over and over. Even if you are a Yoda collector, I don't know how you get excited about another 10 sets with 10 parallels every year. I get Marvel characters can pull from different artists. Does a Spiderman collector get excited about another set using similar photos?

This goes to your thought. If you have been a Marvel collector and have a bunch of character cards from various Upper Deck sets and likely the complete Impel sets from 1990 and 91. Do the base cards of this set move the needle? I think people are real excited because it is chrome. There will be multiple Chrome sets every year going forward, so that "newness" is going to wear off quickly.

After Topps/Fanatics limited allocations to most stores to 1 case or nothing of hobby, they did a 24 hour one time offer yesterday for another case. It was something like 5400 for the case. I wouldn't expect Hobby prices to crater anytime soon.

The modern trend continues, sealed goes up and most singles will not.

Too much hype around this set with the Topps Chrome sports bois jumping on breaking looking for the big names.

The positive is that lots of singles will hit the market with people looking to offload their hits. Definitely a time for singles collectors.
Rough times for people who enjoyed buying boxes at a reasonable price.

Is the Wolverine art on the base card actually Venom fusing with Wolverine or something?

The art itself is not really that important anymore. It's all about the parallel number.

Yep, the "first appearance" of that art on card was the Spider-man metal series. It gives weight to the theory that Marvel only provides a handful of approved clip art for a specific character, no matter what company is making their cards.

So, just like the sports card market. Ever increasing parallels and manufacturerd scarcity.

Opened a couple blasters today, nothing of note except the quality of the cards really is outstanding, like Merlin and Japanese Topps Chrome NPB. These were definitely printed in Italy.

Yep, makes me want to stop buying new boxes all together haha. That 50 years shadowbox posted above looks great, but it's not something I need right this instant.

My pc character has a base card. That means there are, by my count, 23 cards to chase.

And out of those there are two /10s, three /5s, and two 1/1s. It's almost as bad as Leaf at this point.

All sections of the card world has exploded with growth and popularity. If they didn’t increases parallels and print runs a box would cost $2,000. Then you would complain they didn’t make enough and boxes cost too much. Which way do you prefer it? Or do you want to live in fantasy land where all boxes are cheap and all contents are amazing? That doesn’t exist and never will.

Nope, you can cut down on the parallels and increase the print runs and just make them harder to hit. Yes, you will get more complaints of not having less "hits" in the box. Box prices aren't going to be cheap no matter what anymore, unless a total crash of the market. Breakers are going to keep boxes inflated for the foreseeable future anyways. Also, 95% stuff isn't going to be worth much long term anyways in either scenario. The one positive about all the parallels, we get more choices to collect. There is a tipping point though, when somebody is presented too many choices, it is actually a detriment and turnoff.

Topps seems to be doing really well with the Marvel license so far. I wonder how long it will take for things to cool down?

I also want to see how extensive their auto list is for something like the Fantastic Four movie set (assuming that movie does well). I thinj the actor autos in something like that could explode with the sports guys that are new to opening Marvel since Topps took over.

I would offer up the explanation that they are doing "okay" on the grounds that Marvel Card collectors seem to thirst for a set at some given rate higher than DC but lower than Baseball. Probably on par with Star Wars?

My point is, they seem to be pretty restrained on releases which is an easy path to success with such a demand. Even when UD went nuts and released sets too close to other sets ... what was it Gems in 2016 and Women of Marvel in 2024? Or in general too many sets like that, they landed poorly but strangely eventually found some value. Sure, the Shang Chi set was DOA and should remain DOA but ... let's hold the accolades until Topps is forced to release Wandavision Season 2 one month after Antman & The Wasp: The Hungry Caterpillar.

Well, I think the difference is Topps bros will buy anything looking for those SuperFractors, so they will buy up whatever actual Marvel collectors will leave behind from the MCU stuff that (likely) won't do as well.
