If it's who I think it is, their track record is terrible, so not surprising.

One good summer league game and he’s the greatest prospect ever again!

SkipDrogo - One bad one doesn't make him a bust either.

No. Because I didn’t need a summer league game to project him as a bust. Time will prove me right, and the odds are in my favor. Few ultra hyped draft picks ever meet expectations in any sport.

How many players live up to/exceed their hype in any sport over the past 40 years?

-MJ
-Ichiro
-Bron
-Ohtani

That's all I could come up with off the top of my head (maybe you can include Griffey). Guys like Trout, Mahomes, Brady, Giannis, Jokic, Luka, didn't have a ton of hype to live up to before they were drafted.

The list of busts however...

Or Kobe (13th pick) obviously didn't get going until his 3rd season but really his 4th when it became clear he was a star. There's probably a long list of guys who were 3rd/4th season breakouts. So what if Wemby is a project? He can't bulk up and be a stud by 23? Of course he can. But if he struggles in season 1 I'd bet many will give up on him. I'd let it play out and see what happens because at his age and frame he's got nothing but time in front of him.
This... Pretty hard to judge by his first few games in summer league. Also, funny how the best in the world picked him as the number one pick but we can all argue about if he is a bust or not.. Hes just a pup at 19. He puts on some weight, learns the ways of the NBA and stays healthy l, he's got a good shot at something great. Hard to comprehend judging this guy at this point.

Looked good tonight. Reminds me most of Anthony Davis. The stat line looks similar too.

Wemby has an opportunity to be great. He has talent, and seems to have a good support system around him to put it all together. Hopefully he will.

But I don't agree with the ppl saying he is a better prospect than someone like LeBron James. I've heard NBA ppl and even some former NBA players make those kind of statements. I'd take 18 year old LeBron over Wemby. LeBron was physically ready to go from the start. Just watching him in his debut against the Kings, you could tell he was different from the other hs players that came before him. KG, T-Mac, Kobe weren't physically ready Day 1.

Also, a lot of ppl are saying Wemby's such a great shooter from distance. He's not. But again, hopefully he puts in the work and becomes one.

if Wemby played on Friday like he did today, imagine what the headlines would have been.

think Elly De La Cruz, but basketball.

Wemby played awesome. good stuff. now let's see how he does once the season starts, but if you're a Spurs fan, a basketball fan, or a Wemby fan, you've got to be really excited after what you saw these two games.

Add Griffey, ARod (debatable depending on how you view roids), Durant, and Manning to the list.

Look at all the failed to meet expectations picks who were ultra hyped. Luck, Cam, Bush, Harper, Strasburg, Josh Hamilton, Yao, Blake Griffin, and Zion. Subjective definition, but all of these guys saw insane levels of hype. All we’re supposed to be the next big thing. Beyond generational talents. And the only one who saw sustained success and longevity was Harper. But even Harper has failed to meet expectations despite being a top 2-3 hitter since he entered the league.

With the amount of money that people are going to spend on this guy, they’re going to lose a ton of money if he becomes the Bryce Harper of his sport.

That’s the major issue here. There’s a 99.99% chance he’s going to be a “BUST” from a hobby perspective, even if he’s a multi-time all-star, all-NBA player. He needs to be a legit generational, transcendent player to live up to the hype. That’s what most in these threads are cautioning.

This is fair. And time will tell. There are flashes and obvious room for improvements which is how a 19 year old should look. It's media frenzy that's got most people in their feelings. Sounds similar to Lebron when he came in and everyone said pump your brakes. His game was far from complete but some fans felt threatened... Now add 20 years plus the invention of smartphones and explosion of social media...why are we surprised?

I will say regarding the "prospect" label. And this is just my opinion. Wemby has a potential to impact both sides of the ball and effectively. I think his defensive skills will carry him early on much like Lebron's ability to impose his will physically. Even when he got dunked on, I saw him guard the passer, track the ball, and almost broke up the lob. Other's saw the highlight...Pop signed the dotted line. It's gonna happen and happen again lol. I know Lebron is good defensively too but centers can blow up plays differently. Neither were/are great shooters coming in. But it came around for Lebron...in spurts. Point is, it will take some time and this greatest prospect label means nothing cause it's all based on potential and work ethic. To waste negative energy over some words is weird behavior imo

It’s not similar to LeBron. Not even close. LeBron was an NBA starter when he was a junior in high school. He was incredible. There was no pumping the breaks because you didn’t need to. He was a no brainer superstar.

I thought it was offensive to mention Zion in the same breath as LeBron. Doing it with Wembum is a travesty.

Your mispelling actually works in this case as there will be pumping of the breaks!

If you don't recall "The Chosen One", "King James" and "Witness" debates, particularly among MJ die-hards, I'll spare everyone the drama

why do people keep saying that time will tell, we'll see, we'll find out, let's see, it is what it is, it will/should be interesting to see, like these are uncontestable obvious truths

they're not

I think a reasonable expectation for Wemby this year is like 15/9 with 4-5 stocks.

And it would be nice to see him hit at least 35% of his 3s.

I’m looking for 23-ish / 15 seems to be a low bar to set for this “Generational Talent”

He averaged 21.6 in France, he’s going to average more in the NBA in year 1?
