First Kobe stuff spiked with his death, and people said his stuff was undervalued. Then the argument was Lebron was undervalued relative to Kobe and others and that caused a spike. Now Jordan is undervalued relative to Lebron. I see threads saying - well with Jordan rise in price is Kobe next?

When does that pattern end? I’m not saying prices will crash, I’m not saying money can’t be made or there is no legitimate sales. But, I’d love to know how many legit collectors are buying 2500 metal base cards or 5500 PSA 8s.

There are more collectors now and most of them spend in the $1K-5K range. With more collectors and more disposable income, I am afraid this will continue until most of the cards go past $1000. We are not there yet! There are still many LeBron RC's and Jordan inserts that are available for less than $1000. The collector base and spending threshold will continue to increase in the long run imo. We may see dips here and there but the prices will go up in the long run similar to stock market. This is my prediction and I could be wrong.

Agreed, I don't think we will see prices ever return back to what we knew as "normal". As prices continue to rise, the spike will move into the older 90's and 2000's wax as people try to "hunt" for the Jordan and Kobe inserts. At this point I think hitting any Jordan or Kobe, even base will be considered a "solid hit". I'm already seeing a spike in wax prices. I picked up a box of 1995 Finest Series 2 about 2 months ago and flipped it for 4x the amount I paid not even 2 weeks after my purchase. The entire hobby is going to an insane level, and I do think it's kind of sad that it will get to the point where alot of people won't even be able to stay in the hobby due to the crazy prices.

I dug into a lot of 90s stuff and couldn't really afford anything, but I somehow snagged an MJ/Magic/Malone triple jersey /299 for $72. His unnumbered jersey cards are routinely fetching as much/more than that.

Man went on a bit of a spending spree today. FOMO got me. I had to pull the trigger on a Kobe Bryant Soul of the Game as well.

Do asset prices increase over time? Of course, most do. But like you said "like the stock market". The market has cycles and corrections - always, its unavoidable and guaranteed. Look at the stock market volatility we are in right now, massive upswings followed by similar downswings. There are simply no asset classes that just go up continuously. When we are seeing 300% price increases over the course of a few days it is way to simple to say "more collectors".

I would guess on average, people who collect probably have higher income levels than the broader average income, but still are those that do have 5k to spend on cards spending all of their budget on Jordan base cards?

After you get beyond a certain price point, I think the collector pool tends to shrink substantially and these cards tend to trade hands between a select group of collectors, especially in basketball. It's just my opinion, but I don't think we will be seeing $5.5k+ PSA 8 RCs or $2500+ fleer metal base cards in 6 months from now.

I agree.

It will be interesting to follow.

And you can tell how much manipulation there is by our very own BO marketplace.

It's still all Prizm/Optic garbage.

I see very few Jordan FS threads. Why isn't everyone cashing in?

The real question is how high will the peak be? If somehow 8s hit some number like $7-8k, then worst case they'll settle at $5k+. The Fleer Metal thing is hilarious though.

I think the 97 Fleer Metal is ridiculous at the level it is right now.

But I think it deserves it's place as a card most will want to own. It was $60 and I think raw $100 would be ok. You can decide if you want one or not at that price. But $1k and above is a joke.

While I still think $100 is “high” I think it’s reasonable. It’s a nice looking card no doubt.

BO marketplace is smart and have countless Jordans on hand. Why aren't they putting them up for sale yet?

I am talking about the general public of BO. So if we're on the same page, I don't know. Maybe plenty just want to keep them and maybe others are waiting for a peak and the rest don't have any.

It's weird though, I owned a 93 MJ refractor and sold it for a profit (nothing like now though) and I still have a BGS 9 MJ Finest base and they are apparently selling for $200-$250. If you had of told me when I bought it that I could sell it for $250 USD (converted to Ausd it's about $380 here) I would laugh at you.

If it was me I'd cash in on that BGS 9 base and get yourself a nice early insert. 92 Beam Team or Power in the Key come to mind,

I'm having great success moving MJ Base and some other non-MJ parallels to put towards something rare, and on my radar!

Opportunity is there for the right cards now, I just wish I had picked up my Lebron Credentials. Those are out of sight now.

Thank you for the advice. I just might do that. The problem is, I've regretted every Jordan sale I've ever done. And they were all profits also.

If you’re moving MJ right now, do it for other MJ, LeBron, or Kobe. Can’t really go wrong that way. Might still regret it, but at least you won’t look back and ask yourself why you sold your MJ Exquisite for a box of 2019 Prizm.

Ha ha. I know what you mean. Now is not the time to be loading up on MPJ or Anfernee Simons Prizm silvers.....
Or is it?

I think some people are all about the front. If it looks good in their showcase, they don't care how "bad" the back looks!

I get that feeling 100%..when I first got out of the hobby around 2011 i sold the majority of my stuff including all my Jordans so I could get into the full game used market..at the time I thought I "killed it"...looking back...makes me a little sad seeing what those cards for now and that was before this recent surge..I just tell myself without selling that stuff I wouldn't have meigray certified gamers of Duncan, Russ, KG, Jason Kidd etc...lessens the pain a bit
