I just checked a couple of my mine and they don't this specific mark. However I have seem similar surface defects under the chrome surfaces of many '17 Optics (Mahomes & otherwise) in various places on the front sides of these cards & this is usually enough to drop a Gem card down to Mint 9, at least how PSA has been grading these since serial #'s ~45xxxxxxx onward. But if everything else is perfect on the card for centering & corners you might just get lucky

Thanks for the info. I don’t want to be “that guy” but I’m debating returning the card, which I really really don’t/didn’t want to do. I was really hoping that I couldn’t see anything on the card that would make me think it has almost a zero chance at geming. I mean I did spend over $500 on the card with the impression from the seller that it had “a strong chance at a 10”

If seller actually said those words, I think you can return it and avoid the title of “that guy.”

When buying raw cards, you should always assume you’re not going to get 10s!!

Sellers are motivated to sell, and many will stretch things or make vague statements such as the one this seller made in order to entice others to buy! In this situation, what does “strong chance” even mean?

Again, when you buy raw cards online you should always assume there are issues. If you still want to buy raw to try grading, the best things you can do is ask for more photos, ask specific questions of the seller, and check to see if the seller sells graded cards.

Also, I would avoid any seller that describes their card as gradable or gem 10 candidate.

From my experience buying from these sellers, they don't know their a$$ from their hand.

I usually check to see if they sell a lot of other graded cards, but I’ve had pretty good luck on buying raw cards just simply asking if there are any visible flaws on the card, I never ask for a grade or what people think it might grade. Some people don’t respond, but most people I’ve dealt with are pretty straight up, maybe I’ve just been lucky. As far a pics go, it’s hard for me to really tell if a card has surface flaws or not, just like the one I just bought. I can usually tell what the centering and corners look like.

Yea, I usually stay away from the “psa 10?” type listings. That’s why I usually just ask what condition the card is in, it seems like most people won’t straight up lie because of the return policy on eBay.

I messaged the guy and he just said no worries and he didn’t realize the mark was there. So at the end of the day I can try to find another one and he can resell it.

I think at its peak, the PSA 9 contenders sold for around $45k if I remember correctly. $25k-$30k is around where the offers have come in on the one I have so this makes sense.

Yes, based off of that it makes since, that being said there is a lot of bad contenders autos out there so pin-pointing a price point is hard on these, as the good autos should command a premium. The one that sold at goldin a couple months ago for 30k was not very good.

Thanks!! It was a very recent idea I wanted to do after I did the same with Juan Soto's Topps Update Independence Day Run as well. I just really like the look and scarcity of the White Sparkles.
