Thanks for the responses. It's one of those situations where at the time, I was so excited, but the more I think of it, the more likely this could have turned into a very ugly situation, especially if I found out that the card I traded for was altered....

Anyways I knew something was up when he took forever to get back to me, I thought to myself something wasn't right, and then when he came back with asking for an additional $1K in PayPal, well that was the kicker and time to walk away.

I had a few of those and the Emeralds but sold them last year. No way I would give that much for one.

Any reason this particular card was trimmed so often? Definitely gives me pause about trading for/buying one in the future. So the graded ones were found to be trimmed too and PSA/BGS whiffed?

The edging was just really prone to chipping. I think a couple people trimmed them, realized PSA wasn't catching it and then it was a landslide of them to PSA. Think it was COMC that did the research but yeah, personally I'd stay away from them.

The card was basically trimmed at the same rate as any other Brady RC, but it’s nearly impossible to gem without it being trimmed, so the trimmed gem rate is higher than other cards.

I’ve got about $500 to spend on a Mahomes rookie. Been looking at the base optics, but what else should I have my eye on? Most 2017 stuff is out of my range. I already have a base donruss rated rookie at PSA now but I want to add something else. This will be for a loooong time hold. Thanks for any ideas.

I'd check out his Phoenix RC. Raw can be had under $400, PSA 9s can be had under $500 I believe. It's his last chrome silver rookie that hasn't taken off. It might not ever because Phoenix is a meddling product, but IMO it's one of his best looking RCs regardless of the product.

That a nice looking card. Would you go with that over the optic?

I may be over thinking it a little... I know prizm, select and optic are the top choices apart from ultra high end, but I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t over looking anything.

So my thought process is: if you have the Donruss rated rookie, the Optic is a fancier version of that with the same picture whereas a phoenix rookie is something completely different. When the Donruss and Optic are both in PSA slabs, you won't be able to tell the Donruss is paper stock. Donruss/Optic will most likely rise and fall together, Phoenix could do its own thing.

Another one to consider is an Elite base RC if you can find one. The base are numbered /499 but super tough to find and annoying to search on eBay since they also had Elite Draft Picks for 2017 and there's a ton of Mahomes Elite Draft in his Texas Tech uni.

Given the budget you laid out, I would lean into a base optic or a base select premier #103. They are flagship rookies, so you can't go wrong if you can find a good raw version.

Agree with you that Phoenix and Donruss Elite /499 are also great pick-ups at the sub $500 price point. I have picked up all of the above and certainly believe the Phoenix and Donruss Elite are more aesthetically pleasing than the base optic or donruss paper... However, if I only had the funds to pick up one Mahomes RC at the sub $500 level, it would be hard to go away from a base Optic or select #103. I couldn't decide, so I decided to grab all of the above...If you can pick up a base optic in the $350-$375 area, you may have some funds left to pick up a Playoff RC as well (though I would pay a little more to grab the Panini #104...)

So it looks like the select premier is in my wheel house too. I’ll definitely start looking that those too.

Also, I’m a big Acuna collector in baseball too and I’m trying to buy his bat down rookie which is also in the $500-$600 range.

I’ve got the funds to buy both I’m just a cheapskate lol. I just got back in the hobby about a year ago and I’m trying to be ok with spending $500+ on single cards.

Been a long time since I had a Mahomes mail day of note… thanks to arod305, I was able to pick up the following 2018 Silver Prizm. Hard to find these bad boys in gem condition. I am planning to pick up his silver prizm every year over the course of his career (hopefully the next 15 years…) and knew this card would be my primary obstacle, given the extremely low population.



Now I just need the 2020 Silver Prizm to complete the family. Feel free to DM me if you have one for sale. One day, I will crack the GMA and submit all 3 raw 2017 silvers for grading. I know the GMA card is probably only a 9 because of centering, but I can’t stand that slab…
