Are you giving him this because of the position? Or, what?

with his track record for the last 4-5 years, those 7 seasons will amount to about 3-31/2 years of actual playing time

2010s - Mike Trout

Would say that’s a pretty good compass to get to an inner circle. Trout led by nearly 20 wins and didn’t play regularly until 2012.
The rest of his career will dictate if he's a part of the group of names listed, or if he's the outlier, along with Joe Morgan.

Other than those two, every guy on this list has major milestones (3,000 hits, 500+ HRs, SB record, multiples of these, etc). 8 of those guys are in the top 20, Morgan a top 30-50 guys.

Of course, ranking vary based on how people view the steroid guys

Schmidt was the whole package. an absolutely dominating player. probably the 2nd greatest defensive 3b of all time, and one of the very best home run hitters. He led his league in home runs more than any other player in history minus one- Ruth. Certainly a top-10 player.

Joe Morgan won back to back MVPs, played for a dynasty, was a 100 WAR player. He’s one of the very best players ever.

This tells you all you need to know about this entire topic. People can't even agree that Schmidt and Morgan or Frank Robinson are all time greats. How is there even possible room to agree on Trout, who is still writing his story?

There's nothing about him that's "top 10" except maybe defense.

Edited to add: He's a "top 10" third baseman. So, there's that.

No one is saying Schmidt, Morgan, and Frank are not all time greats. They all are.

The topic was about elite inner-circle HOFers. That means different things to different people.

To say Mike Schmidt is a top 10 player of all time though is just silly.

All of this was born from the death of Mike Trout who’s funeral is still unplanned for some reason. I would like to attend and pay my respects.

I agree on all accounts that Mike Schmidt fits those categories.

But…

I have personally never met anyone who thinks Mike Schmidt is a top 10 player of all time.

You will not find many who agree with you

do you consider Trout to be a top 10 player? Do you rank Trout above Schmidt?

Add to that Schmidt win all 3 of his MVPs at 30, 31 and 36 years old. Seems all time great players make it past 15-16 years before age and time catch up unlike todays players

I didn’t put Trout on the top 15 list to begin with when folks were proposing a hypothetical elite list of HOFers.

You said Schmidt should be on the list. So who gets the bump from that list of 15?

Again, no. You quoted my list and said Schmidt was deserving. Trout wasn’t on the list to begin with.

I never rank pitchers and position players on the same list. Two completely different skill sets.

I would rank Schmidt above Jackie, Clemente, Pujols and Musial.

He was an elite offensive player. Ruth has the all-time record for years leading his league in HRs. do you want to guess who is number 2 on that list...

Schmidt wasnt a top 10 third baseman. he is the greatest third baseman. by a margin.

I’m waiting to read that Dave Kingman was a better player than Mike Trout
