The Penguins have vacillated over the years. I’ve just grown weary of watching Crosby get slashed over the head or cross checked in the head and the NHL shrugging it shoulders, “but playoff hockey”.

The issue is really deeper to how the gears of the NHL actually turn. Unlike the other major leagues, the GMs vote on rules and major decisions - not just the owners. So what you have are GMs deciding what rules are ultimately going to help keep them in their jobs. Not necessarily what is best for the game. So allowing skill to be muddied down with goonery is going to get more votes because there aren’t enough GMs with the highly skilled players on their rosters. It’s easier to get muscle than it is high end skill and ultimately better job security.

It’s really a broken system, especially in light of the concussion issues. The NHL went through a knee jerk period and brought the hammer down on a handful of players for about 5-8 years and has since over the past 3 plus seasons really just backed off enforcement.

Then ultimately in the playoffs it just becomes looking for a reason to not punish.

The last major piece is just the persistence of the good ol’ boys club. There is no other major sports besides possibly the MLB and the “unwritten rules club”, where how it was 30-40 years ago is held up as some standard that must not be tarnished. So many of these buffoons still have major seats at the table when it comes to meaningful decisions.

Ultimately the NHL has become its own worst enemy in terms of creating a product with real growth potential. It’s seems more than happy being a niche product that allows itself to turn into a beer league game on its biggest stage.

The NHL decides to just let everything fly in the playoffs and turns it into a completely different game and style. “Playoff Hockey” is just regular season hockey where the bum players get to hold, hit and generally do whatever to negate talent and skill.
Pretty much how the Broad street bullies won 2 cups, there are certain teams that can combine brawn and skill like the islanders dynasty but they were borderline bullyish.

I think out of the major sports hockey might be the only one where a team with less talent can even the odds through intimidation.

Being a big, physical team isn’t necessarily bad. Hockey is an awesome sport when you combine skill and physicality.

The issue is when the league decides to change the entire game for the playoffs to allow stuff to happen that would get called in the regular seasons and uptown fall just allows physicality to cancel skill.

Well put Doctor J , which Stanley cup winners of the past would you say actually didn’t use bullying to win their cups, here is my top 3 the Edmonton Oilers, the Montreal Canadiens and the Pittsburgh Penguins with the Islanders being a close 4th but with Clarke Gillies and Bobby Nystrom I just couldn’t put them in the top 3

You're right, that doesn't sound good. The woman I'm interested in. But, in all honesty, since I've started talking I've basically pushed all the other ones to the back burner. It just feels different with this one. It might end up going nowhere, but we're having fun right now.

The youngest SD was talking the other day about blowing off the vacation with the middle SD for the grand daughter's birthday and going on a Disney Cruise instead. Just looked up some cruises and found the same one I went on back in 2000. The best part is my Disney Rewards card is stacked with points so I can get $1000 off the cruise and by the time I have to pay it, I'll probably rack up even more money from my upcoming trips. I'm going to suggest it tonight to them and my wife.

I could start a thread but I will just post it here.

What are your top 5 personal interest moments in sports. Could be a game a series a moment in time whatever made you ecstatic when it happened. My list might surprise some.

1- 1980 gold medal winning team U.S.A hockey team it seemed at this moment in time the United States were actually United.

2- 1993/94 New York Rangers Stanley Cup Championship, after suffering through my whole childhood and watching some great Rangers teams not reaching the summit this win made rooting through all the losses worthwhile.

3- 1977 New York Yankees this was the first World Series they won in my lifetime that I was old enough to enjoy.

4- 1986/87 New York Giants Super Bowl win over the Broncos, another team I rooted for since childhood and never thought they would win 1 let alone 4 it made the Pisarcik to Csonka fumble loss to the Eagles less horrifying.

5- the 1969 Mets winning the World Series I was only 8 at the time and not really a fan of any one team but I remember this as one of the only times me and my father bonded over a sporting event as my father never really got into sports all that much.

Those are my 5 feel free to share yours if you would like, I would love to read them.

Got to run to a meeting, but good idea here.

Off the top of my head, it seems like the tragic injuries that I witnessed in real-time always stick with me the most:

- The Tyrone Prothro leg snap
- Dak's leg snap
- Marcus Lattimore's knee exploding
- Colt McCoy's shoulder injury in the championship game
- The US gymnast (Kerri Strug) who landed her vault on a broken leg

As for most meaningful, probably every Texas-OU game I got to go to with my dad before he passed.

There are only 2 injuries I have seen live at the moment they happened and both were on Monday night football, Lawrence Taylor breaking Joe Theissmans leg and Hamlin this year.

1. The first time I had a wrestler qualify for the individual state finals. I don't know who was happier, me or him. It was my first year as a head coach, and the school hadn't had a state qualifier in over 20 years.

2. South Carolina beating #1 Alabama in 2010. I was there, turned down more than I paid for my season tickets for my 2 seats for that game. That was a great day.

3. South Carolina back to back baseball National Championship in 2010 and 2011. My cousin was on the team both years as well as the runner up team in 2012.

4. Alma Mater winning the boys basketball state championship. I had coached all the boys in football in middle school. They made it all the way to state 3 straight years, but lost the first 2. Year 1 was a buzzer beater, year 2 NFL WR Mike Williams went off on them and our 6'3 center scored 34 points but they came up short. Year 3, they ran the other school out of the arena infront of a sellout crowd of over 18,000.

5. Watching CJ Edwards pitch for the Cubs in the World Series. I'm a life long Cubs fan, and CJ grew up with my brother. It was amazing seeing a kid I knew pitching in game 7 of a World Series for my team. He was in town over the weekend and went to the youth basketball games. I was sick so I wasn't there. The kids all got pictures with him and he signed autographs for them.

I was in the stadium that day. They never showed a replay and I couldn't tell who it was until all my friends starting texting saying how bad it was. I still have never watched it. Being in a crowd of 80,000+ and hearing nothing but silence is chilling.

2011 Bruins. He was whining because Tim Thomas was getting all the credit and the next game the Bruins put a snowman on his ass.

Impressive list bigdog, unfortunately none of the teams I played on through my teens did anything worthwhile except my babe Ruth league team that went 12-0 but lost the title game by one run, only chance I ever had of getting a championship trophy so that bothers me.
