Absolutely. It crushes streaming. I dont like to be tied to specific subscription platforms and physical media quality us far beyond streaming.

Plus you don't "own" movies you buy/stream, regardless of what they (Vudu or Amazon) tell you.

Exactly. They come and go too. Whats on a service now may change. Hell, I even buy rare blurays of some exclusives. For example, I paid $120 for a Brazii-only version of The Ritual. Looks so much better than Netflix.

Just got the Alien 4k 40th Anniversary in 4k BluRay. Its like a whole new flipping movie.

The packaging on some of them is really cool. I like what are called "face-plates". They are basically DVD or BluRay sized trading cards packed with various titles, usually featuring newly commissioned poster art. It's a nice keepsake, and sometimes they can be sold to get back what you paid for the whole thing.

Here's a horror-themed series that was issued about 5 years ago.

These were issued in DVD (DVD case sized with sharp corners) and BluRay (slightly smaller cards with rounded corners):

Here's the rest:

Decent and worth the watch, but nothing to write home about.

If you have Tubi, both seasons of the Masters of Horror episodes are a great watch. Awesome, campy fun to be had, reminiscent of the one off X-files episodes but slightly more mature.

Masters of Horror was originally made for Showtime about 15 years ago. One of the episodes, "Imprint", directed by Takashi Miike ("Audition" & "Ichi the Killer") was deemed too edgy to air, even on an uncensored Pay-TV channel like Showtime, and was only released later as part of the full season one DVD set. Not sure if that one is on Tubi or not, but I highly recommend it, although it's unrelentingly dark, and not for the squeamish (not that there's anyone like that running around this thread).

Other standout episodes include "Homecoming" (Joe Dante), "Pelts" (Dario Argento), and "Dreams in the Witchhouse", another Lovecraft adaptation from Stuart Gordon who'd previously helmed feature length adaptations of the author's "Re-Animatior" and "From Beyond".

Not to sound grumpy—horror is my second favorite genre behind quality science fiction (horror makes me grateful things in life aren't worse, sci-fi lets me imagine how things could be better)...

...but it makes it harder for me to enjoy flicks when they go with the "multiple random ghosts" approach. Like in the Conjuring series or Fear Street or even Insidious. If we're talking about a haunted location like in The Shining that manifests various forms of evil, that can work in many cases. But simply seeing random ghosts pop up with no backstory and no indication as to whether we'll be seeing them again, really lowers the stakes for me.

It reminds me of when I was 8 and would write "scary stories" on my dad's yellow legal notepads. The characters would run from a dinosaur and then from a vampire and then from a werewolf and on and on and on. I thought they were all cool monsters and so I threw them all in.

I actually went to a theatre and paid to watch that. I kept waiting for it to get good. Still waiting. Not my finest moment.

I watched it last night. I came away a little disappointed as I expected more. Afterwards I watched "The Wind" on Netflix. By comparison, this cinematic pile of puke made "A Classic Horror Story" look like an actual horror classic.

I want to watch something 'good' tonight. Between Prime, Paramount+ and Netflix is there anything worth watching?

Thank you!

Some of the standard classics (if you haven't seen them) on Prime are The Descent, Alien, My Bloody Valentine, or Pumpkin Head. If you like the zombie themed movies, Mulberry Street was entertaining IMO. Howl was also a good creature feature type movie. Netflix has Hellfest, Insidious 2 or The Conjuring 2.

I find it kind of hard to suggest movies to people. I like some weird sh*t, so a lot of the stuff I watch other people groan at. I mentioned some of the more popular movies but there are a ton of good horror movies out there. If you haven't tried this yet I'd suggest looking up some movies you've all ready watched on Prime, then go to the "people that watched this also liked" option. I've found some good movies this way. On Netflix I believe it is the "movies like this" option. Hope you enjoy what ever you choose to watch!

NetFlix "Black Summer" is solid.
Each season plays like one long movie.
These are the types of zombies that don't fool around.
The dead turn instantly (no matter how they die) and then run faster than they did when they were alive.

I really REALLY liked this movie on Amazon Prime called Afflicted (made in 2013) that had the first person POV camera style of Cloverfield or Chronicle. Two guys set to go on a year long tour visiting countries around the world, something goes wrong early and one of them gets extremely ill

There's a Netflix Original called "Dark Entities" that should be premiering sometime in the next few weeks. Movie was filmed just down the road from us ... the youngest kid in the film is a rival in my son's 14U soccer league.

Unfortunately, the movie doesn't look great. Guess we'll see.

Next weekend has four releases that I am moderately excited for. I doubt any of them will be great and it's precisely because I have low expectations that I think I'll enjoy them.

- Reminiscence: Looks like a highly-stylized knock off of other high-concept films like Inception, the Prestige, and maybe even The Fountain. Still, the production value looks so good that I'll set aside the inevitably ridiculous plot holes to have some fun.

- Demonic: Had zero interest is seeing this until I realized it was by Neil Blomkamp. Still don't have a ton of interest, but Blomkamp is pretty good at adding a new twist on well-worn plots.

- Night House: Looks like a standard, but well-produced, haunted house flick.

- Risen: Looks like a decent blend of Arrival, The Crazies, and The Happening. I'm fully prepared for it to be awful, but it looks like it will hit at least a few fun notes along the way.
