As you know grading is going to be key for unlocking the value of your collection. I'd obviously send all the gem candidates and maybe send borderline stuff too especially the medium end. PSA 9s of $200-$500 cards are still well worth grading and I gemmed quite a few cards I thought were 9's, and probably gemmed more cards I thought were 10's too because a grader isn't going to gem a whole order regardless of how pristine every card may be. Give the grader some cards with flaws so they can feel good giving you your 70% gem rate and you can get 10's on the great majority of stuff you think deserves it. Just my opinion, everyone's got their opinions as far as grading goes.

Yes, that is the plan! Grade all medium end ($100 or more) cards (as long as I think they are an 8 or better), and grade all low end RC that I think have GEM potential.

At this point I think I have like 700 Ohtani RC cards if you include off brand panini (which is a small minority of my RC cards).

Consolidation is a journey all collectors go through at some point. From my experience catching a few big fish is more satisfying than catching a bunch of runts.

when we are talking about pandering to the future people with these Ohtani's, (IMO) the worst thing you can do is offer them raw. i know, i know, not everybody collects graded cards, blah blah blah. but look around you, look at all the flash and pizzaz that's going on in the hobby. record sales of this card, that card, old cards, new cards, etc. what do all those cards have in common? they are graded. when was the last time a 52 Mantle brought in the big bucks (and media coverage) in raw form?

Who do you think is paying for the puff pieces of those sales in media that advertise the grading company, and usually the auction house as well, of said graded card sale?

It does for the part i bolded. The only reason you see news media articles about graded card sales is to advertise and promote the companies involved, usually psa and goldin or the other similar entities. Raw card sales do not achieve the same advertising benefits as the graded card sales for the companies so theres not a benefit to those parties to promote them as they do with the graded sales you mostly see the articles written about. If you think those articles written are organic and not paid for or influenced by the companies involved, then in my opinion you are naive on the subject.

so you are saying the sales are fake?

regardless of HOW they are promoted, the sales are still the sales unless of course you believe they are made up.

i understand how they are promoted. but to think that not grading them adds to their "monetary value", i dont know what to tell you.

Fake sales? I made no mention or reference to that, nor did i allude to it. My point was only directed to your question that i bolded as to why you dont see high dollar raw sales mentioned and advertised in media as you see with the graded sales which is why i only bolded that part to reference my response was directed at that alone. I did not address your statement that grading them may add to their monetary value so why are you saying i said that im of the opinion that it wouldn’t potentially add value? Raw cards sell daily just like graded cards. If a raw card sells at a show for big bucks that would represent a record sale for that card, you may not hear about it if the seller or buyer keep quiet about it. They have nothing to gain by paying a news outlet to promote the sale with an article as the grading and auction house companies would. It doesnt mean those high raw sales arent happening, you just may not be hearing about them due to the reasons previously mentioned.

Curious from all the veteran collectors here -- What do you think about long term collectibility of his first year 2024 Dodger cards vs. 2018 Angeles rookies? Clearly RC dominates but does Dodgers first year resonate? Especially team color blue variations and short prints. He'll be a boy in blue for a long time.

2018 stuff will be completely unaffected by the Dodgers move. If he continues to be Sho and carves out most of his legacy as a Dodger, post 2019-2023 stuff will start to take a backseat to his Dodgers stuff. Similar situation if Soto extends in New York.

Agreed. It’s not going to negate the value of quality Angels stuff post 2018, but I think the Dodgers stuff will carry a bit more of a premium. Griffey in a Mariners uni vs Griffey in Reds is significant.

If Shohei continues to do Shohei things for a solid stretch of years (especially if he makes a successful bounce back from TJ on the hill), all of his stuff has room to run regardless of jersey though.

Dang, I went to Japan in the wrong March! That will be incredible. Gotta say I understand the hate that Manfred gets but he's made some smart moves, this is definitely one of them.

Hope you didn't go in July. I just got back on the 10th and the heat was really challenging.

I live in Florida too.

If you are ever in Nagoya, make sure to visit Nagoya Castle.

They have a very interesting exhibit we can all appreciate.

Very cool. Haven't been there since high school. Only in Japan (for Shohei) would they want someone to sign a historical 3-4 century old piece of history .
