How would they get Drummond? Clearly there was no trade market for him. And he was never going to sign with the Mavs.

Fournier wasn't a possibility when the Celtics had that giant trade exception.

What about even Norman Powell
Portland gave up Gary Trent Jr for him and a first
Dallas could have offered Richardson
and a first round pick. Or offered first round picks
for Aaron Gordon. I like Donnie Nelson but this
team needs help.

There really wasn’t anyone out there who was going to come in and make this team a true contender for what they had to offer. The Mavs don’t have a treasure trove of picks and someone like Gordon isn’t gonna put them over the top. I think they ultimately decided this isn’t the year to go all in. It’s time to see if KP is the long term answer to play along side Luka. If they fail miserably in the playoffs they won’t have any excuses in the off-season and next years deadline.


And let’s be honest nobody here has any idea what’s going on behind closed doors there. If Cuban had any suspicions that Luka was thinking about bolting after his contract I would be very surprised if he didn’t sell the farm to keep him there

First move this offseason if the playoffs are a failure is Rick gone. Since the title in 2011, they haven't finished above sixth in the West and have zero playoff series wins. There's no player development happening. Nelson needs to go too. He's done a terrible job constructing the team, and they have zero draft assets to make moves with.

Agree about Rick, but Luka and the Mavs are at least 2-3 years away from being championship contenders and Luka will only be 24-25. He is so good that people want to make him a top 5-10 player already, he might be in the top 10 depend on what you looking for. I am a long hold on Luka because he is just that good. Still picking up a card or two but this year a top 5 finish in MVP voting will do fine going into the off season. And I have sold zero Luka to back my long hold up.

Agree on Rick and Nelson. As far as a GM goes sometimes bringing in someone younger helps. It did for the Red Sox anyways and helped them win their first championship in nearly 100 years when they brought in Theo Epstein at 28. They actually won 2 under him as GM and then he went to Chicago and did the same thing ending the their 71 year drought. He was good at bringing in talent probably because he was younger and could smooth talk and relate to players better. He was also probably a lot more ambitious about putting together a title contending team.

I am a Lakers fan, so no skin off my back
However, Luka is still my favorite player
and if your patient and have a long
term view, I am sure he will have his
share of MVP’s and championship opportunities.
But in the meantime, I can’t conceive that the
current roster as is will make a strong playoff
run this year especially now because Portland, Denver,
and LA, all improved themselves. I think that Dallas fans
are being a bit delusional believing that KP is a clear
number 2. True he can shoot the 3 and spread the
defense. But the latest scouting report was that he
looks like a scarecrow on defense trying to get in a stance
and he is not a great rim protector. So no crying if
the Mavs don’t make a deep run in the playoffs this year.
I hope I am wrong because I would rather watch Luka
then Lebron any day.

I would re-read thread. Most of us are in agreement that KP isn’t the answer and that they are not a contender this year..

Melli looks good on the Mavs so far. He's not spectacular or anything but definitely an upgrade over Iwundu. He was on the opposing team that Luka beat in the Euroleague finals and scored 28 points. He looks like a smart player making the right plays.
