I think it's a combination of a few things. First, and foremost, it's just flat out Ohtani fever. People buying what they can afford and then starting to dig deeper on a cheaper level to see if they can find overlooked gems so they can keep buying the player. But since Ohtani not only IS a two-way player but he's also great at being a two-way player you end up with people that enjoy his game in one fashion or another a little bit more than the other. With Ohtani, he has so many pitching RCs that virtually anything of him taking a cut or standing in the batting box adds a fresh dimension for a collector. I wouldn't go out and invest in Ohtani batting cards but I do enjoy them as a collector and Ohtani fan and will continue buying Class 1s. Why? It's fun. Arthur |

I agree buying Ohtani is fun...especially while he is playing like he has been. I try to catch as many of his at bats on MLB network. But since I am newer to the hobby (entered during Covid) I am still navigating and trying to find my way in what and how I collect. Since I don't buy to flip, I am just trying to find reasonable priced raw cards that I like and want to hold onto. I also like the Topps black label (not just class 1), but did pick up another class 1 black and class 1 blue /150. Not sure if I over paid, but I was happy with the price I paid. |

I agree up to a point. I don't want to spend money frivolously on things that have no value (or the potential to hold no value) either. Not that I use cards as an investment. I just don't want to lose a ton of money either. |

The 2018 BC Refractor /499 has gone nuts since last year, picked up one in PSA around $100, maybe 150 at most but they are about 10x that now!! ![]()

Can someone clarify Topps gold label Class 1,2 and 3 for me since I only buy singles. Are the class types based on a series or how rare the cards are?

Oh I definitely agree. We want our purchases to go up. There is an investment component to the hobby, but if a person is just buying fir that, they will be disappointed more times than not.

I'll be the first to admit that the Heritage Low ROA is a superior card to the Heritage High ROA, head to head. There is however a wrinkle in the comps, as many H-Low ROAs were redemptions, thus having a decent gem rate. All of the H-High ROAs were packed and the production/packing condition was rough - especially centering and edges. The H-High ROA PSA 10 is population 5.
It wasn't easy but from the jump, I was able to overpay a bit on the cleanest looking copies and grade them. Even then, the gem rate was 30/70. The 5th copy came on the market in late 2020 (I didn't grade it), but I was cheap and got outbid. Probably just obsessive, but there's a strange satisfaction to own 80% of the pop. ![]() |

There will definitely be a collective sigh of relief when he hits 95-97 on his first fastball. Everything they're doing (+ his performance) suggests there's nothing wrong with him, but it sure wouldn't hurt to see him light up the gun.

There was a time where if you whispered Ohtani on this forum, you'd be laughed at. |
