I just picked this up at my local card shop today: 1955 Topps Willie Mays

I couldn't believe how centered this was when I saw it. I'm a big fan of the 1954 & 1955 Topps set, so I had to have it.

I have to imagine that Bulkeley is one of the 10 or so toughest HOFers to get, considering his age.

Also, out of all the players, umps, managers and execs in the HOF, he is by far the least deserving.

Nah....he's definitely tough but totally not 10 toughest.

There are at least 30 that are nearly impossible to impossible.

Another 30 or so that are possible but very, I mean very expensive.

He's just after that.

There's a list somewhere from psa/DNA showing the rarity of each guy, but many argue some of them. In general, it's ok.

Completely agree. For me, I just put 19th Century HOFers in the "impossible" category along with the 14 20th Century HOFers who died before 1950, 13 of which died prior to even making the Hall which reduces their supply compared to others. Granted, you can find most of them, but to your point, they are often expensive. So, I'm just saving those until the end.

For those interested, here are the 14 in order of passing:
Addie Joss
Rube Waddell
Frank Chance
Christy Mathewson
Eddie Plank
Ross Youngs
Miller Huggins
Joe McGinnity
Jack Chesbro
Jimmy Collins
Johnny Evers
Vic Willis
Mordecai Brown
Hack Wilson

Also, most of the 2006 Negro League inductees are in my "impossible" category.

Well, to me....

Of course when I started (2005) I got as many as I could, which meant the cheapest. I think I got to 150 pretty easily. I had to start spending triple digits I think around there to get 200-220, and I think from there, you have to be north of 500 per item, something like that....

I'm stuck at 244, and can easily have 245 if I got a Schuerholz, but wanting to get a letter instead of a TTM card....

Where I am , it's over $1,000 per new guy (next cheapest for me would be a Mordecai Brown, Bresnahan, McGraw). I think at 255, it's over 2,500 per item..... and then it goes way up from there......I think that's probably where I would top out in the next 10 years (not assuming new people added).....

Only know of a couple higher than me in the 250's, one in the 260's, and although I haven't seen any pics, someone on Net54 has at least 270..... this is of course out of 317 total....(I think that's the #)

My advice....if you're trying to stick to sports cards, then expect to run out of steam quick or have deep pockets......Get away from the Legendary Cuts and stuff and switch over to other things.... I had many and have sold to get nicer items, like GPC's, letters, and checks....

If I get 1 guy a year now, it's an accomplishment. I've been upgrading items and NBA HOF collecting the last year or so because it's just become too expensive......

If you are north of 200, to me, that's impressive....I remember hitting that and being so happy and satisfied, my pc felt like a little cooperstown.... but NOBODY is going to get them all....I don't think the hall even has it all.

I'm in the same place although a bit farther back, probably 175 ish or so. I was getting bummed out so I started collecting NFL and NBA HOF'ers to have something attainable to chase. That was great for awhile but now I'm at the same roadblock with those. I need to figure out how to be happy attaining 1 or two a year vs the 10 a month that I've been used to.

That's pretty awesome. Having a HOF auto is cool but having one on a piece that you created yourself is approaching Fonzie level.

Thanks. My main hobby nowadays (not counting art commissions) is creating sketch cards of sports stars and getting them autographed.

JMS....that's exactly why I started on the NBA hof and trying to collect a few autographed sets.....Part of the enjoyment is to get a package, rip it open, and get a first glance at it. That all stops when you're dealing with $$$$$ items.
I worked up from cheap to expensive, but I know another guy that kept an eye out for rare stuff, and instead of spending money on a ruth, cobb, or something, he jumped on a few rare names.....cuz ruth/cobb is always available.....
So now, with me, not only am I stuck with expensive guys, but I'm also stuck with rare.....things don't pop up as often....

But I have a lot of respect to those collectors with deep pockets that continue onward 250+ guys.

Not too many people know I collect, but I'm sure when they find out they'll say "so, you have jeter? Ruth? mantle? Griffey?" And will completely overlook the guys like George Wright, Kid Nichols and such....

I may have made a poor choice. What started out as a cheap way to continue my mail day rush got me to now having 110 + NBA HOF'ers and 230 + NFL HOF'ers. Now I don't just have one sport that I can't afford to complete, I have three.

I would have been better off taking all of that money and using it towards rare and/or expensive MLB ones that I need but nope. Oh well, too far down the rabbit hole to turn back now.

That's very cool though! I know that George probably signed a decent amount of autographs, since he didn't die until almost the 1940s, but the fact that you still have an autograph from someone born in the 1840s is awesome!

Good luck finding a Harry autograph. I would imagine that it would be super rare.

This exercise is certainly showing how hard it is to get some of the old time HOFers.
