Thanks for the kind words everyone. I’ve always wanted a Vlad mystery auto with a decent signature. I agree with Biohazard and think it will always be one of his most iconic cards.

When prices were down in the offseason, I was able to grab a sealed copy that looked sharp and the seller said he couldn’t see anything wrong with it in hand. Always refreshing to do business with honest people. Would have been happy honestly with a 9, but pleasantly surprised with the 10.

Still great Vlad deals to be had out there!

There’s something about a .330/30/100 batting line that looks particularly fierce.

Also, he’s got an outside shot at the batting title. Here’s to a Bobby Witt Jr. mini slump!

Getting 200 hits would be another nice accomplishment for him. (on pace for 201)

That would be a very nice feather in the cap.

If he gets 200 AND bumps his average up to .330, and assuming Witt keeps his average at .330 or higher, I believe it’ll be just the 49th and 50th times a player will have batted .330 with 200 hits and 30 HR in a season.

About half of those seasons came pre-integration, six of them were aided by home games at Coors Field, and quite a few others were accomplished by obvious steroid users. (I’m talking about you, Bret Boone.) So it’s quite a rare feat to do it clean (and outside of Denver) in the modern era.

Papa Vlad did it twice. Pujols, Miggy, Beltre (perhaps questionable), and Acuna each have one such season. Before these guys, we have to go back to Don Mattingly in 1986 for the last irreproachable .330/200/30 season.

This is an unofficial list, based on me going through Baseball Reference’s list of players who’ve ever had a 200-hit season and a 30-HR season (not necessarily in the same year), then going through and finding who did it in the same season AND batted .330. My initial tally was a bit short, as I now have Witt’s season being the 54th, and Vlad’s hopeful effort would be the 55th.

I tell ya, the old guys had it easy back in the ‘20s and ‘30s…

Rogers Hornsby (3)
Babe Ruth (3)
Chuck Klein (4)
Al Simmons
Hack Wilson
Lou Gehrig (7)
Earl Averill
Babe Herman
Ripper Collins
Jimmie Foxx (2)
Hank Greenburg
Hal Trosky (2)
Joe Medwick
Joe DiMaggio

Stan Musial (4)
Al Rosen
Hank Aaron
Frank Robinson
Don Mattingly

Ellis Burks
Larry Walker
Matt Holliday
Todd Helton (2)
Charlie Blackmon

Mike Piazza
Mo Vaughn
Alex Rodriguez
Bret Boone

Vladimir Guerrero Sr. (2)
Albert Pujols
Adrian Beltre
Miguel Cabrera
Ronald Acuna Jr.
Bobby Witt Jr. (pending)

A lot of these post-1990 names are Coors or PED-adjacent. Makes the accomplishment more impressive IMO!

Up to 199 hits. But he’s hitting .326 with two games left. So, while 200 hits is very likely, reaching .330 is a much steeper hill to climb. It would basically take a 5-for-8 over the weekend. Or he could go 4-for-4 on Saturday and take Sunday off. Not impossible, but odds are against him reaching .330.

Regardless, still a very impressive season.

Great season falling under the radar since his team is in last place.

Hard to stay relevant when you failed expectations the past few years, your team is in last place, and there's a handful of other players putting together historical seasons. Glad to see him back to his 2021 self though.

This week's Throwback Thursday set features Vlad Sr. but he's misidentified as Vlad Jr.
