Thoughts on buying a 2018 Bowman Chrome Ohtani auto now as opposed to waiting? There is a PSA 8 on Goldin right now that's one bid away from hitting 5k. A PSA 8 of the same card sold for a little over 3k back in September.

Hitting or pitching? A pitching PSA 8 auto sold on eBay dec 29 for 4750.
I hadn't been tracking the price lately but definitely seems like it jumped up a few thousand from last year. PSA 9 autos were between 4-5k a year ago IIRC

Also what's your plan for the card? Long term hold for the PC, or short to mid term hold to flip for profit potentially?

I really hope Shohei has a good season. The expectations are crazy high and people I know who only saw the money will flip if he doesn't hit a homer at his first AB.

I would wait...I don't think a lot of people know he isn't going to pitch this year

Hitting. That's the more valuable one, right?

The plan is to PC it for a long time. I just don't want to overpay. Assuming the price doesn't drop substantially over the next few months, this will be the most I've paid for a card by at least a couple thousand.

People should not be putting a considerable amount of money in cards without doing their homework. Look up the releases, pop reports ,etc, and know what you're buying.

The hitting one got hyped up at one point to become more expensive than pitching but they might be back to equal again. The pitching one came out first in Bowman 2018, while hitting was in Bowman Chrome 2018. I don't see the prices dropping before the season starts but once people realize he's just a DH this year and if he's not the #1 hitter in the league, prices could come down a bit during the season...but then leading into 2025 season there will be the 2 way player hype to go right back up. If I didn't have one already I would probably wait to buy it at the moment. Just my thoughts off the top of my head without digging in depth into sale history

It's also pretty safe to assume we will be seeing Shohei in the playoffs for the next 10 years, which will be AWESOME!!!

Not sure who this is directed at, but if it's towards me, I don't really know what you are getting at. I have done research. I already referenced comps. I am asking if people think now (during the off-season) is a good time to buy an Ohtani card versus during the season.

This is essentially where my mind is at at the moment. As much as I want to see Ohtani dominate in his first season with the Dodgers, there is a part of me that hopes he doesn't, so that I have an opportunity to buy some of his nicer cards at a fair price.

The Bowman pitching was pack pulled and the first release. The batting was heavily redemption. The gem rate is very rosy for the batting - a PSA 10 was the common outcome. If comps are the only thing that matter, feel free to disregard.

Thank you. That's good to know. Since the card is going to be PC'd, grade doesn't really matter much to me. I would prefer to buy the hitting version because I like how that one looks over the pitching one.

According to 130point PWCC completed a 2018 TC Red Auto sale this week at almost double the previous comp because the listing stated the card was /5 (it's actually /25). Buyer beware!

Is there a general % difference in price for hitting cards vs. pitching cards?

I prefer the one with the best looking auto

Not sure I'll be cracking this one. The slab and baggie are so thick, I really can't tell

Those subgrades are real solid, Trueblue. If I had enough money, I would buy one of the kanji '18 Exquisites in a heartbeat.

That's kind of what prevents me from cracking. The baggie presses on the corner of the 180pt card and I can't tell what is from the baggie pressing and the actual corners. Might as well go to the casino if I crack it without that insight.

I would have already cracked it if I didn't have another copy in a PSA slab
