Just a little over a year ago I purchased a BGS 7 with the rest of the team set for $1000 and flipped it for $1600 a couple months later.....for the love of God I wish I had it back.

Thats the first BGS 9 Ive seen on Ebay since last summer

And to think only 3 years ago I remember there were like 3 BGS 9s sitting on Ebay for $7500 - 9000

Unreal

There are very strong asks on a number of grades up on ebay now. $50k for the 9, $14.5k for an 8.5, $5.2k for a 7.5, $4k for a 6.5 and of course, $15k for nameandking's 8.

I doubt any of these get there ask and that's coming from a fan of the card. The BGS 9 is a stunner and the market is bullish on key HOF RCs in their top grade though so who knows.

I agree

But then again I honestly did not think an 8.5 would get 12k (not to mention even 10k) and 2 of them were just sold

The askings are high but I think the sellers will just wait it out for the right buyers on these, though I dont see that 9 lasting for more than a month IMO

I agree. That's been an interesting dynamic on the Star in recent years. Most 101's seem to come up as BINs and they usually have what many would consider unrealistic asking prices. I feel many sellers are content holding and waiting for the market to "catch up" to the ask.

That is a very sick card, 6celtics33! And I am with you on passing on a 15k offer on it. I'd have done the same.
There are some great points made here on the scarcity of the 101 and the overall significance of this card. Personally, I have always wanted one or at least wanted to see one of these in hand and I've been collecting for a good 20 years, so they are by no means abundant.
Now that I can finally afford one (at these price points), I'm really gonna start working on acquiring a clean copy. I've done plenty of research on it and am comfortable enough to now add one to my PC... Gotta get in before they undoubtedly get out of personal reach a la '52 Topps Mantle. Would love to add one to accompany my 86 fleer bgs 9.

Yeah I'd definately snatch one up sooner than later

If you plan on spending more for a cleaner copy, that would be a smart move as I think the cleaner copies will increase exponentially on these as time passes on

I made it a priority to pick up 2 of these as soon as I could over any other MJ card including the 86 Fleer which I will eventually pick up as well

A smart collector knows the numbers on the 101 and it is simply not a card to wait on

Good luck and let us know how it goes

Knowing the centering issues that plague star cards across the board I chose to go that route and find the cleanest copy I could find. So the 101 has its own specific issues. It's the top card on the bag so that means the corners are constantly in contact with the bag so finding completely clean corners are tough. Surface is tough for the same reason. Imagine the old days when these were distributed and going through the mail back and forth in those bags what the odds are of finding one with no white on the corners or edges. It's an anomaly that there are any the way these were distributed and stored. Centering presents its own challenges. You have off centered ones but then also you have tilt and diamond cut to contend with.

Given that it's Michael Jordan and all the challenges it presents and the rarity it is important to me to hold on to the one I want once I found it and I have found it. I'll sell it someday but I'm 32 and it won't be any time soon. I also feel that Jordan is the basketball equivalent of Mantle and that over time these cards will continue to rise. So would $15,000 have helped me? Absolutely. But then I'd just buy another 101 that I wouldn't like as much so what's the point.

Well the one I want, I've had my eyes on for a while. I was finally able to work out a deal for it!
. I looked at quite a few throughout the past few months for close to a year. This one had everything I was looking for except for of course the centering. But I am extremely happy on being able to acquire this particular one, nonetheless. Corners and edges were a big point of emphasis on the one I ultimately wanted to purchase. So finding this one, as I did, had to snatch it up. The centering on it doesn't look as bad as it was graded. I'm just comparing to other examples I've seen. I'll be taking a closer look at it once it comes in.

Just got the card in hand. Couldnt be happier. Such a sharp and clean card. No white showing on the corners or edges at all, which was important to me.

Well that 7.5 for 5.2k is now off the books and I paid a fair amount less than that price tag.

The 9 for $50k, 8.5 for $14.5k, and 7.5 for $5.2k are now ALL off the books

That 9 didn't even last a week

Will the "boy cried price manipulation" posters still remain in denial??

Its the Greatest MJ card on the planet

Beautiful card, I need to get me one some day.. I just don't get how they grade the centring, very inconsistent at BGS.

@6celtics33, thats is the most stunning Star 101 I've laid eyes on, even nicer than that 9.5 with a white corner bgs graded years back, thanks for sharing

Hey thanks man. Congrats to the people who just picked one up. They are great cards. I've been told by people I trust that have seen it that the 9.5 is much nicer in person and the scans didn't do it justice. That can happen sometimes.

In the past few months other auction sites have had 8.5's and they sold for 6400 - 6500. If you want to buy an 8.5 from me for 12k I will gladly take your money.
And now $6200 for an 8

Wow

Starclown rests his case

I think collectors are beginning to catch on to this gem an the uptick in the market clearly reflects that

Its great to see the 101 get its long overdue props

Beckett's population report indicates there are now 2 9.5s

I know of the one that sold in the Beckett Auction for 52k

Has anyone seen a scan of the other one?

Maybe a regrade bump?
