Benching Pujols sounds like a decent enough plan, but they didn't really have anyone better that he was holding back.
They had CJ Cron in 2016 and 2017. He had a .792 OPS starting at 1B in 2017. He has a career .800 OPS and was an All Star for the Rockies this season. The Angels traded him to the Rays in 2018 and he had a .816 OPS with 30 home runs that season.

Ji-Man Choi was on the opening day roster for the Angels in 2016, but they DFA'd after the season. He has an .813 OPS against righties for his career and would have made a nice platoon mate for Pujols.

They had Jared Walsh beginning in 2019. Pujols had 364 PAs against righties that season with a .686 OPS. They could have given Walsh most of those PAs.

How do y’all like the looks of his 2001 Bowman Chrome Autograph long term? It’s relatively affordable and reasonable compared to some of these young guys.

Henderson broke the Runs Scored record 2 years before he retired.

Don’t get me wrong, I live Henderson and love what Pujols is doing. But Henderson played 25 years and broke that record in year 23 (still a great achievement at his age and that he could still play!).

Cobb played 24 seasons to set the record and had 13,072 PAs in his career. Rickey had 13,040 at the end of 2001 when he broke the record.

You have to hang around forever to break records like that. That's just the nature of those types of records. Henderson didn't have any playing time advantage over Cobb to break it though.

If I did my math correctly. He's on pace for 19 Home Runs for the year. Meaning 697 but he's been playing really well lately and probably going to leave everything on the field. Hope the Cardinals let him play more if they have things clinched/summed up towards the end of the year.

Pujols in the trainers room, while looking at Tyler O’Neil…

“I’ll have what he’s having.”

He's gonna have about 50 ab to get 6 home runs.

I’ll be cool if he lands on 697.

I got a feeling that if the game is a blowout on either side and Pujols is in the lineup,he may get a gimme pitch or two.

Especially if they throw a position player out there!

Just got his 122nd Sac Fly. That broke his tie for 4th all-time with Hank Aaron and Frank Thomas. Now just 1 behind Robin Yount for 3rd all-time.

I’m not a Cards fan, but have long admired the way Pujols has carried himself on and off the field. Seeing him creep toward 700 this season has been an unexpected and fun journey. Rooting for him!
