Dr Strange asked Thanos to spare Stark and gave him the Time Stone in trade. He kept true to his word.

When the Avengers find Thanos and he says he destroyed the stones, Nebula says, “He’s many things but he isn’t a liar.”

So, that sort of ties the two together. At least, that’s how I took it, as part of that.

Not to mention during IW and needing the Soul he confronted Gamora saying He taught her a lot but never how to lie which is why she was bad at lying about knowing where the stone was

I wonder how awkward the encounter was when Cap went and returned the Soul Stone?

Because he knows the Red Skull already?

The snap was indifferent. He didnt snap away the ones he wanted to snap away, he merely used the stones to eliminate half of life at random. That was his philosophy, explained very clearly in Infiniy War.

They could absolutely do one more Cap movie with Evans returning the Stones, and tidying up loose ends like Loki and Black Widow. Some of it would be SHIELD-like espionage returning them on the sly, but one he could just return to the Ancient One, and tell her what had happened to get her take on it. But just like Steve wouldn't even tell Rhodey the name of his wife, maybe maintaining the mystery of it all is part of the charm.

Short of a movie, maybe Marvel Comics will do a mini-series or graphic novel detailing how Cap returned the stones understood to be "canon" in the MCU. It would be easy to use any character the writer/artist wants, and not needing the actor. They could have a lot of fun with it AND have some solid dramatic scenes just like the "Endgame" movie (which I thought was extremely well done).

The question I have is how does one return it to begin with? If it’s soul for a soul, shouldn’t Black Widow come back?

Finally saw it last night. Made it nine days living in this modern, information-saturated world without any spoilers. I haven't read all of this thread, so I'm just going to toss out my thoughts and then go back and read everything:

- 21 Bridges and Gemini Man both look like they would have been the hottest movies of 2005. In a way, those trailers were the best instances of feeling like you were time traveling of the night.

- Godzilla: KOTM looks beyond incredible. There's that saying "every frame a painting" and I got that exact vibe watching the gorgeous scenes of the "titans" charging at each other. I've also been avoiding spoilers for this movie, so hearing them say seventeen titans caught me by surprise.

- The hardest-hitting scene in the entire movie for me was the very first scene where Hawkeye's family dusts. That was some of the best drama in this entire cinematic universe and I began preparing myself for a film that would blow The Dark Knights' gritty and gripping atmosphere out of the water......then the upbeat music came in with the intro credits.....

- I loved this movie. My biggest critique is that it felt very uneven. It was as if the writers knew they had dozens of opportunities to really explore some darker emotional places and instead decided to always bring the audience up for air immediately. The film never seemed to dwell quite long enough on the heavier scenes before bouncing to some action or a gag scene.

- My biggest impression as I walked out of the theater was "Damn, Infinity War was a legitimate masterpiece." Endgame is a solid "A" movie with few glaring flaws at all, but every narrative misstep or moment of broken immersion immediately made me think of how perfectly Infinity War was able juggle its plotlines and maintain a fantastic flow of emotions. I do recognize that a lot of this has to do with the situations both films faced. In Infinity War, we had "the greatest crossover ever" but each of those various, colliding casts already had very well-established chemistry coming in. The jokes all landed and the emotion was poignant because it was the culmination of multiple films' worth of buildup. Endgame didn't have this luxury because (as it had to be) all of that chemistry got dusted. Now we had team-ups like Rhodey and Nebula and radical personality changes like Fat Thor and Professor Hulk. (Professor Hulk not making a "strongest Avenger" or "I guess you are the bigger fire" joke upon seeing Fat Thor was a missed opportunity.) All of these things could have worked better, but it would have required too much time to flesh out: Ex. I absolutely loved the line Rhodey gave Nebula in the Temple of the Power Stone about doing what they (those who are disabled) can with what they have. I wish it had come at a moment where Nebula was having doubts or needed further character growth, because it was powerful.

(I'll be honest, Thor is a fat suit for literally the entire movie was something I never got used to seeing. Some people I saw this with absolutely loved it, but it kept breaking my immersion. I kept thinking of Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder.)

- The absolute best bit of writing (plot-wise, there was some great dialogue elsewhere) for me was the twist of both Nebulas using the same neural frequency and becoming linked. This did two major things: 1) It allowed Thanos to learn of the Avengers' plan through completely believable means and 2) it managed to set up some nods to the actual comic book plot where Nebula is a main player, seizes the Gauntlet, and has to be put down by the team. And it did all of this without asking the audience to further suspend its disbelief or through some deus ex machina plot device. Brilliant.

- Going back to the uneven tone, hands down the most ominous, dread-filled moment of this entire 20+movie arc was when the infamously detached and methodical Thanos realized that killing half the universe would never work and he realizes he must eliminate all life. I got goosebumps when I realized what he was realizing. It was a moment of existential dread........interrupted by Rhodey and Rocket drowning in a basement. I mean, I love me some War Machine and gun rabbit, but it was really hard to care about that particular scene when it was playing out concurrent with the Mad Titan deciding he would tear the universe apart atom by atom.

- One of the brilliant things about this movie is that I feel like, depending on the life experiences of the viewer, you can walk away having seen a completely different movie from the others in the theater. For me, having lost several loved ones, I felt like the action/fighting/comic book scenes were secondary to the scenes about loss and grief and coming terms with what we can save and what we can never bring back. The heaviest scenes for me were 1) Hawkeye's family getting dusted 2) Thor's mother saying the simple line "we have time to talk" and 3) Tony's daughter asking for a cheeseburger. It didn't help that when I checked my phone after the film, I had a series of texts from my cousin (my uncle/his dad passed away two weeks ago) saying today was the first day he went to call his dad before remembering he was gone......

Of course, all of the scenes like Cap wielding Mjolnir were incredible and my ticket price was more than worth it. Now I can rejoin society without fear of spoilers.

And only a few more weeks until Godzilla!

Maybe I missed it, but what key event occurred that allowed Cap to use the hammer? He wasn't worthy in Ultron, and he already was prepared to give up his life back during WWII. I didn't quite follow that part.

I’m thinking that the “wiggle” Steve was able to get out of the hammer (remember Thor’s expression changing) signified that he was worthy all along. The reason he didn’t actually lift it was because he wasn’t really trying or maybe because everyone was simply trying to show off their strength rather than their worthiness during that evening of goofing around.

Then again, I think that moment told Steve just as much as it did Thor. Why else would Cap even try to call the hammer to himself if he walked away from that experience actually thinking he wasn’t worthy. When the hammer moved ever so slightly, he probably realized that it was possible all along.

I can live with that. If I remember correctly, Thor did yell "I knew it!"

I partially think it has to do with the person realizing they are worthy of holding it. That Mjolinir comes to you when you need it the most and you realize you’re indeed worthy. Who knows? It was amazing and is probably my favorite moment in any MCU movie.

With Cap, I think it was events of Civil War and everything up and including the final battle in Endgame that kicked up his level of worthiness to "enchanted mallet wielding" level. Even with the world in a 5 year long state of depression, he'd still not given up, as shown in his support group scene.

Despite everything and kitchen sink being in it, this movie just as fittingly could have been titled "Captain America : (subtitle)" or "Iron Man 4". It's a real testament to the strength of the characters and the actors who invested a decade plus in making them real on-screen. Hats off to Downey and Evans, both on the short-list of all-time best work by any actor as any super-hero (or villain).

I just saw Endgame last night and also managed to survive MOSTLY spoiler free this whole time. My only encounter with a spoiler was when I attempted to use Thanos snap GIF and saw one of Stark snapping and Thanos turning into dust but i convinced myself it was some fan made thing and not from the actual film.

I do have a few questions, observations, and a gripe perhaps you guys n gals can give help me out.

I've seen all the MCU movies up to Infinity War and I am totally lost as to how and why Red Skull is the guardian or guide to the Soul Stone. The only interaction he had with a stone was the Tesseract and that was in the 40s. Can someone explain?

On the subject of the Soul Stone I honestly thought that Hawkeye and Black Window were going to get the stone without one of them dying. The deal with the Soul Stone is that you have to lose what you love and Hawkeye had already lost his family and therefore lost what he loves. Now i hear that Black Widow has a solo film coming out which might be a prequel or some sort of an alternate timeline / realm deal?

How did everyone know where to meet up and battle Thanos after they were unsnapped? I understand that they grabbed the stones from the past, brought them to present time ( 5 years post snap ) and unsnapped everyone. I just don't know how all Doctor Strange and his order knew where to go get everyone and open a portal the Upstate NY. Especially the folks stranded on Titan? I know, I know, suspend disbelief and honestly I don't care all that much I just am curious.

I am of two minds about the Cap wrap up. I hear people saying that is isn't like Cap to take a back seat to major threats rising such as Hydra in Shield and various wars. My rebuttal to that is that he was frozen during those events the first time around and interfering would cause a big problem and an alternate timeline. That being said him going back and getting with Peggy does change things and goes against the rules set forth in the movie because the past is now his future yadda yadda.

The sound at the end of the credits. It COULD be Stark in the cave building the Iron Man suit. It could also be his daughter in the future. Tony and Morgan had a conversation about how they both like to tinker in the garage / shop. Just a thought I am tossing around in my head.

Cap having the hammer was really cool but I was bummed go see the shield break. I thought Vibranium was unbreakable?

My gripe is in the beginning of the movie after Tony gets rescued and says something along the lines of " I told you we needed a planetary defense and yeah, you would lose some k your precious freedoms but... " not very subtle placement of propaganda by the Technocracy... but I digress.

Finally got to see it, and I have thoughts:

1. Captain Marvel: i was worried that she was going to end up as the dues ex machina to defeat Thanos, but it was more of "Hey, I'm in this movie, too" though I will say that was an EPIC entrance in the final fight.

2. Captain America and Iron Man: Fitting ends for both, and Cap wielding Mjolnir was the highlight of the movie.

3. Professor Hulk: Eh, OK. I wished they'd deepened his voice more and ditched the glasses, instead of just making him big green Banner. And did he even participate in the final fight? I don't remember seeing him after Ant Man lifted the rubble off of the trapped Avengers.

4. Captain America's butt. Did we really need that many mentions about how great his butt is?

5. Time Travel Rules. I liked the plot, but I'm trying really hard to not think about the inconsistencies in every explanation the movie offered. Just roll with it and enjoy the ride.

6. Black Widow. Fridge magnet. Boy, it sure is a good thing that the 2 people sent to recover the Soul Stone loved each other, so they'd have someone to throw off the cliff. What if Rocket and Ant Man had drawn that straw?

Overall, I liked it, I loved the final climactic battle, and I enjoyed the movie in its entirety. But I'd say Infinity War and Black Panther were both better movies.

He attempted to use one of the stones for personal gain. As punishment he was banished to Vormir and eternally doomed to guard the Soul Stone.

Thank you for explaining! Was Red Skull's punishment explained in the films and I totally missed it? Doesn't everyone try to use the stones for personal gain ( except Dr. Strange and the Time Stone and the creation of Vision to save the planet from Ultron )? Who punished Red Skull? A cosmic force?

The Red Skull himself explained why he was there in Infinity War when Thanos arrived.

Yes, I understand that but it just seemed kinda of odd and out of left field. The video that was posted below actually clarified it a lot more for me. Thank you again.
