Are you a Comic Book Guy also Pac-Man? I’ve never heard anyone mention foxing outside that world - which I am also in

Valuation question for the group:

If you have some modern sealed wax but there's a small tear in the shrink wrap, say the size of a dime... How might that impact the value of the box?

depends on where the tear is, how big etc....

If it's a new box that can be replaced relatively cheaply, I would do that.

It's an F1 Sapphire box so cheap replacement is out of the question. The tear is about 1/3 way down on a side of the box. Like it got caught on a corner of something else and pulled off. I'd take a pic but am away from home for a bit.

Keep in mind any box may have been handled improperly before you received it. UPS trucks get very hot during the day for example.

That means long term you can't always predict what will happen. I have an Inkworks box from 1998, that I always properly stored, and the wrap started loosening years ago like crepey skin.

Since the shrinkwrap is actually cheap plastic, stacking your boxes together unwrapped may get them to react and stick together. It won't happen for everyone but if you're in a humid location where items are often affected by foxing, then extra precaution is worthwhile.

If you want boxes that are in top condition, packed as securely as possible, my suggestion is to branch out beyond the big 3 and either buy local or try smaller online retailers. Avoid D&A as their shipping practices are the worst of the big 3.

I've never had this issue, but I keep my unopened "box/comic" room at 68 degrees year round. Bottom line: humidity and heat will kill boxes, no matter how well they are stored.

Other boxes, no matter what you do, you are going to have issues that are beyond your control (example, I have an upper deck ultimate collection box from 2000/2001 with inferior factory wrap from UD: very brittle to begin with. Notorious for that box. I give that box special attention and store it alone.

Again, not slamming anyone's methods: Do what's right for you.

bummer.

So you live with it and do the best you can to keep it from getting bigger. This is one of the few cases where I actually would wrap it or try to protect it from becoming a bigger issue.

Mine came from Topps with a small hole in the back and a crease to the packaging as well. Just got to try and maintain it the best you can if you are keeping sealed. Even in not ideal condition it should be an excellent hold candidate.

Is Bowman Chrome the "safest" wax investment? Hypothetically, if you bought a case each year for the past decade you'd be killing it. Your 2011 and 2016 cases are big money and 2018 isn't bad either. Doesn't seeem like any cases would really be a loss.

It's overwhelming to look at all the wax options to purchase. I'm debating between trying to get a little bit of everything or focusing more on the hobby cornerstones i.e. Bowman Chrome, Flagship, Prizm Football and Prizm Basketball.

Do a lot of you guys buy on release day or wait to see if a product is going to be good and then buy at that time? BO has prizm football on pre-sale for $1,250 but I'm not a believer in this years class and don't see that going up much. But I also don't want to miss the next Mahomes box.

everyone is different and has their own thoughts on what years to collect, what sports, brands, etc.

and with fanatics taking over, the ballgame will change over the next few years.

I prefer to wait until a product is actually released to see the checklist, redemptions, etc. This can be tough if the product is hot right out of the gate and you pay more.

In years past, I used to get one box of almost every release, now I focus on products that I think have the most potential long term, the rookie mix, etc.

2018 topps update comes to mind, so does 2000/2017 football, 2015 hockey and 2018 basketball (though Luka is slumping right now)

In regards to this years prizm, I agree with you, the rookies have been underwhelming, and I have not pulled the trigger on a box yet. I am also worried that prizm may be vastly over printed, even more so than years past, not necessarily a bad thing depending on your prospective.

My gut says it will drop in price slightly and hopefully, I can get a couple cheap boxes in March/April.

edit: YES bowman chrome is usually "safe"

That’s an expensive, investor box. If you’re holding it and keeping it sealed, best to not handle it, and send to BBCE for their new ( 2022 ) Modern shrink wrapped authentication box service - they will shrink wrap your box, which will cover your tear with their wrap, and problem solved

As for your “how does it effect value” question - that depends on the buyer. It would be a deal killer for a guy like me, but luckily for the Hobby, I don’t think there are that many condition Super-Freaks out there ….

I have a few silver age ones but nothing that comes close to having white pages. Some vintage magazines too and people are less likely to take care of those. That's where you can really see what humidity and temperature does to things over time. That musty moldy smell is the worst.

I have enjoyed seeing all the great sealed boxes, cases and packs in this thread. Been working to inventory my collection and finally found the bin I had put these in.

Anybody going to hold 2021 Draft? Mayer, Lawler, Davis, Pacheco, Cowser, Montgomery, Kath, House... Seems like a class that will surely have someone pop off.

Does draft ever really appreciate? I don’t feel like I hear too many people looking for draft.

Hasn't 2019 draft nearly doubled yet Adley, CJ, and Riley haven't made their debuts?

I don't know an example beyond 2019, but seems that product would be good to have right now at release prices.

By production I believe he means each card. Not 250 boxes.

That box had a lot of seal issues. Luckily mine is pretty good but in general lots of issues shouldn’t really bring value down on it.
