Probably hanging out with Cavs fans and not paying attention to basketball...

Not even a jab at Cavs fans. Every fan base is like this when they start to win. It doesn't even bother me anymore since it's so prevalent.

Also, where do you expect fan bases to be? Obviously it is easier to root for a team when they are good compared to when they are bad. It doesn't mean that you don't like a team or don't go to an occasional game, but even people that are life long fans of teams go to less games when teams are not winning. Unless you have the luxury/money/location to be a season ticket holder, you probably just don't go to a lot of games. It doesn't make you less of a fan, but as a budget conscience individual you are going to spend more on entertain/sports when your team is rewarding you as the fan by being more competitive.

I've had this conversation a couple times with people and have heard people talk about it on NBA radio a lot recently. "Bandwagon" "Fair Weather", blah blah blah. Where are all the fans of EVERY other team? They are at home being quiet because their teams are not in the Finals, doesn't mean they don't exist, it just means they aren't squawking on a message board.

Let people be proud of whoever they want to root for. If they are a warriors or a cavs fan just starting this year, well good for them, hopefully they will continue to follow the team for life. As long as people buy in and understand the game, the team, the players, then cool, hold your head high and be happy YOUR team is in the finals.

Actually they have always been around. Even when they had the worst record in the league the fans were still nearly selling out each game at Oracle. See this article from 2011 before anyone was thinking about more than making the playoffs. 2008/09 and 2009/10 seasons they lost 53 and 56 games yet still were 9th and 11th in the league for attendance for those years. For a team that made the playoffs one time from 1994/95 to 2011/12 people still showed up to make the arena loud

Let's do the timewarp again....

All the attendance stuff was raised last year, because the same thing was discussed then. And it showed that people were still going to games when their record was poor.
What are we going to bring up next? Whether Draymond should be suspended for kicking people in the groin?

We have to be careful about generalizing fans. I once used to talk basketball on social media a lot with a guy who was a hardcore Dubs fan, and he had been for years. Obviously this is a great time for him, but he was also there when they were less than great.

I've been an OKC fan since they came to OK in 2008. I used to live in Joplin, MO, close to the OK border, so they became like a local team for me. I had previously grown up in TN and the closest team was the Hawks, but they never felt like a local team. I liked OKC even during the early years when Durant and Westbrook were new and there were growing pains. I still support OKC now even with Durant gone, but it was admittedly harder to watch them as much this year.

As for the Cavs, I admittedly wasn't too much of a fan until the big three experiment. I was fascinated by that and wanted to see how it worked out. I watched them almost as much as OKC last year, so they became like a second team to me.

I'm sure every fan has their own story. It's not like team fans are monoliths.

I even still have the info -

Now, regarding bandwagon fans, every team will generally see changes when success changes.

The Warriors from 1989/90-1996/97 averaged a sellout every game despite being sub-.500 for 4 of those 7 years. That suggests loyalty.

When the arena expanded in 1997 the numbers fell, but were never below 62% capacity and that included 5 straight seasons with 21 wins OR LESS…

As they approached mediocrity, the attendance perked up, with their highest ever attendance in 2007/08 (and a 48-34 season). Since then, they never averaged under 92% capacity despite half of the seasons being losing ones (including 3 years with under 30 wins). They’ve sold out since 2013/14 as their performances have improved.

Golden State’s largest change in attendance since 2000/01 was a 10.3% increase, in said year.

You could compare that to Miami, who saw a 10.4% increase when LeBron joined them in 2010/11. However, despite him leaving, their attendance has remained high.

The better comparison would be the Cleveland Cavaliers. 55.9% attendance capacity in 2002/03 leaped 33% when LeBron was drafted for the 2003/04 season. Attendance remained high until the year after LeBron bolted for Miami – when there was a 20.4% drop. That’s significant. When LeBron went back to Cleveland for the 2014-15 season the attendance rose 15.7%.

So, the three biggest changes in attendance in this review were in fact with Cleveland – when LeBron was drafted, when LeBron had left, and when LeBron returned. Does this not suggest that in fact CLEVELAND have more bandwagon fans?

Something that's crazy to me is the amount of young warriors fans I see where I live. I don't live in a basketball market but it's amazing how much warriors gear I see (probably even more than Raptors gear which blows me away still being in Canada). I see a decent amount of curry, Thompson and durant jerseys this year and 99% of the time the person wearing it is 16 or younger. People can say warriors fans are bandwagon fans but there is a ton of young fans that will grow up warriors fans and will remain warriors fans their whole life because of the popularity of the team now. I know tons of guys who are still bulls fans because they grew up in the MJ era (if it wasn't for the Raptors coming along I'd still be a bulls fan haha) and I think the same will happen for the warriors in the future. Any team with a strong fan base usually had a good run of winning to build that base

Should be a good game tonight

Right, that ties into a point I made earlier in the thread about ratings. Lots of young people are loving the Warriors' style of ball. It's fast and fun for many of them to watch. Plus, Dubs players are likable (except Green). Curry in particular is a laid-back, easygoing guy who is easy to root for. Doesn't say or do anything dumb on or off the court. I'm sure lots of parents find it easy to have their kids like him. It's good for the sport and the fans that someone like Curry is excelling.

Sometimes the warriors have standing room only available which bring it up above 100% capacity.

I believe the season ticket holder waitlist is around 50 or 60,000 people right now with everyone paying a 100.00 deposit. I don't see attendance dropping anytime soon.

Lacob bought the team for 450 million a few years back and now it's worth a couple billion. Talk about a gold mine.

I can tell you where I was 7 years ago. I was at Oracle with lower level season tickets.... which back then... the entire season was cheaper than ONE finals ticket now... haha

DUB nation has always been present... it was just never heard about around the nation because there was no media coverage due to a quite subpar team...

LETS GO DUBS!

It comes with the territory of winning. I grew up in the Bay Area (Vallejo) and I've always been a Warriors & Oakland A's fan (I wasn't much of a football fan back then). Now I live in Seattle and I've never seen this many Warrior fans here ever. My wife & I watch the Warriors about once a year at Portland. After they won the 2015 NBA Finals, the amount of Warrior fans at Portland games has increased maybe 10 times.

As a true fan, I cannot complain. If your team has bandwagon fans, that means your team is doing well. At least now, I don't have to order Warrior gear online anymore because it seems like every sports store carries Warrior gear now.. lol.

But if you're talking about the long time fans that didn't say much 5 years ago, that just means there really wasn't much to talk about then. No different than Laker fans right now. I know there are true Laker fans there, but I'm sure they're a bit quiet right now because there really isn't much to talk about after Kobe's departure. I'm an Oakland A's fan, and I haven't really talked about them much also. That doesn't mean I'm not a true fan.

On a different note: Go Warriors!

The biggest bandwagon fans in the history of the NBA are the Lebron James fan boy club members.

Preach on, my friend! It's definitely a "quiet time" for us A's fans (and not to mention double quiet for me as a 49er fan) hahaha it's been painful the past few years but at least we got our DUBS!!!

I do find it funny how someone from Ohio is asking where "Dub Nation" was 5 years ago? Last I remember, people from Ohio were burning LeBron jerseys.. shoot, even the Cavs GM wrote a letter to LeBron on their newspaper and told him he basically wasn't welcome back to Cleveland. After LeBron left.. Cavs fans were quiet. Now LeBron came back and fans are buying his jersey again, and now you want to ask where Dub Nation was 5 years ago? Okay.
