As an Ohtani collector..does one value more in a game used ball or an auto card? Part of me wants an auto card, but with card prices the way they are I feel like game used balls will have more sentimental value (i.e., something that attributed to his game vs being handed a stack of cards to sign).

I think the big thing is "liquidity" because cards usually have comps but every game used ball is different and harder to determine pricing for. I'm not planning to sell, so the game used ball seems more and more appealing. Anyone go through this decision? What made you pick one vs the other?

From a PC perspective, if I was set on getting an auto, I think a ball is a great way to go for the reasons you said and a great display/conversation piece. But not sure how affordable game used Ohtani balls are, I know regular signed balls are <$1k though.

If I was going to go the card route, I'd probably look for a recent card/auto that is affordable (compared to early stuff) and is aesthetically pleasing for a display piece.

Game used baseballs directly attributed to Ohtani is a lot more expensive (2k minimum) compared to the price of some Ohtani autos. I collect game used baseballs (mostly hits by a player) because they are more unique than most baseball cards. Couldn't afford baseballs directly attributed to Ohtani though as they were over 1k from the get go in 2018 as I was directing my collecting budget into Acuna at that time. Collect what you can afford.

Speaking of things we can (and mostly can't) afford, I did a deep dive on the non-auto '18 Bowman Chrome batting image superfractor and couldn't find it anywhere. I checked Google images and articles, BGS/PSA pop reports and couldn't see if it exists or not. The auto superfractor of course was pulled but the non-auto is harder to find info on. Anybody know anything about it?

Also, anybody ever pull or buy a white whale Kanji bowman RC auto? Would love to see one.

holy cow...

I just found in a box of cards in my home a 2013 BBM 1st Edition Silver Facsimile Autograph card. Looks in pristine condition too. I knew I had the 2nd edition hitting but not the 1st Edition pitching. Completely forgot about the 1st Edition.

It's wild to think about where this thread was when it started. Just Trueblue, me, a few others and some people arguing about how he could never win MVP or that he could never stay healthy with the double workload. And now you have the regular blowout bandwagonners like TBP and Little Khal post here everyday and they were never heard from in this thread until Ohtani became the hottest thing in the hobby.

All are welcome. Join the money train!

Buy for the love of Ohtani and PC. At this point buying to flip will be tough where prices are currently (seeing some slight drop recently too). Not sure if/when prices will increase by much, maybe spring 2024 if things go well in the meantime.

In the longer outlook, if he keeps this up a few more years and then some, sky is the limit.

Fairly self serving post there. We welcome all comers in this thread, it's great when people realize Sho's greatness and decide to participate. Especially the immortal TBP.

In the words of another immortal, the immortal words of Lyle Lovett:

"That's right you're not from Texas, but Texas wants you anyway."

Self serving of what? I get served nothing with this post but you better believe I'm gonna gloat when I was on page 2 of the greatest baseball player of the last 100 years while the entire hobby had written him off

Did you miss the "All are welcome" part? It's still really funny to see two of the most prolific posters on this board now posting in the Ohtani thread more than anywhere else when they didn't sound a peep in it for years until he became MVP. We're happy to have them on board the bandwagon too!

The consensus amount scouts was he would never be a good hitter. How crazy is that?

Just for fun went back to see when I first posted, page 4 not too shabby (I think I was scared away by the monster cards posted on the first few pages lol), but the image links for the cards I posted are no longer viewable. Still have the cards though

It's been a fun ride, Shotime's legend is still growing!

I can smell #42 coming...

Meh, the whole "blowout bandwagoners" thing rubbed me wrong. Gloat all you want, I gloat about being right about Shohei as well. I guess your insistence on a pecking order with you and True being atop it was offensive, given the generally positive atmosphere round these parts.

I'm not down with those that have stars upon thars, in general. You can always show thy cards, this is a more acceptable and palatable gloat in these parts. One can show thar cards without having stars upon thars.

Congrats! That's an awesome find. I've been picking up some of the 2013's but nothing at that level.

Anyone with a passion for collecting (not flipping) Shohei is on equal footing. Plenty of nice cards to brag about out there!

As a n00b bandwagon-jumper, I'd just like to say that this Shohei fella is pretty good at baseball.
