Personal opinion, you got hosed. On both grades. I don't grade my cards and by no means an expert but there are dozens of other Ohtani cards which have received better grades in this thread alone. Well maybe not dozens but you get the gist. Bowman was one of his earliest signings when he wasn't overwhelmed with signing hundreds/thousands of different cards and took the time to sign neatly.

Is the PSA/DNA cert something new or did they upsell you. The base set didn't have Chrome parallels other than the Rookie Autos which were numbered with player initials so why the need for it? Not like it was a TTM. So glad I don't grade.

And beautiful card by the way!

Thousands? I know the hobby loves PSA but I’ll never get it. What they do is extortion plain and simple and I can’t believe the collecting community (who complains about EVERYTHING) goes along with it like it’s cool. It’s not.

Not sure why you spent the extra money on the PSA auto grade. Huge mistake. I would've sent it to BGS and called it a day. Very likely would have come back a 9.5/10, which is better than the dreaded 9/9

While I totally agree with you that I made a mistake paying for the auto grade, I disagree with the BGS part. IMO most collectors associate BGS 9.5 = PSA 9 especially with 9.5x3 & 9.0x1 subgrades. Those just don't crossover to PSA 10 very often. And everybody knows BGS is more lax with their auto grading standards, just look at other Ohtani autos (and Jackson Holliday Draft). Obviously I wanted a 10 and overpaid on grading but at the end of the day I'm content with it.

Now, I'm really looking forward to tonight's start and hoping he can throw in a Sho-bomb or two. Triple crown is out due to Olson's RBI total but 60+ HR is still in play.

It's a tough call to go BGS or PSA. Yes, PSA is terrible with the upcharges...but if one thinks the card has a good chance for a 10, kinda have to go that route for max value...unless the card is so good where you shoot for a BGS 10 first.

Ohtani ranking top 5 in batting triple crown and pitching triple crown is very possible.

I'm not sure how anyone outside of Eagle Eyed Joe can confidently call something a BGS 10.

Batting avg will be tough once Seager qualifies, unless he falls off a cliff.

To be fair BGS charges you more (in insurance) based on value too.

On the card grade, no way to determine that via a pic on the internet.

Not THAT much more. I’m not surprised that they do it. I’m shocked that collectors go along with it. We’ve got a whole forum of people that complain about blaster prices rising $5 or $10 bucks but we’re cool paying THOUSANDS more for a grade from a TPA? That’s crazy. Especially considering PSA is the only company that does this, it’s not like some industry standard. They’re milking us and we love it.

I wouldn't go so far as to say we "love" it. But yeah, unfortunately ppl accept it (myself included).

PSA has become the clear gold standard when it comes to selling graded cards and that's pretty much the reason ppl go along with it.

It's a scam but at this point, a necessary one.

Well at least my work has a few benefits.
Saw Shohei was here in Houston this weekend so sent an email saying I need suite tickets for Saturday. Had them 10 minutes later.
Will be my first time seeing him live. Pretty stoked.
