I posted a recent timeline of SGC and BGS in the grading forum: https://www.blowoutforums.com/showthread.php?t=1622252

Conclusion: It looks like Collectors is trying to kill any strong competition in the grading space -- shocking, I know.

How ere either SGC or Beckett strong competition? Yes SGC graded a good number of cards but secondary market value for like graded cards was 15-20 % of PSA if that. Beckett has been a disaster for at least the last 5 years maybe even a bit before that. Only thing they had going was the less than 1% chance you would get a black label.

It's like Neo Cards is always saying....

" If you want things to change then start paying PSA prices for the same grades in SGC, CGC, or Beckett slabs ".

Strong as in they were growing in market share before being acquired by Collectors. They were becoming a viable alternative to PSA and were cementing their positions in the market. PSA's grading is more expensive and very inconsistent, so you have to factor that into your calculus when grading with them -- it isn't just resale value.

Well, I guess I should of archived those sooner. As of this morning, the entire Beckett web site is gone. The front page is still there, but all links give a 403 Forbidden error.

Looks like the site is back up... maybe they were doing maintenance? Still, it could be a reality one day that it truly will be gone.

No idea who the person is, but someone has filed an antitrust case against Collectors Holdings, trying to breakup PSA/SGC/BGS.

A couple good recaps.

It was SGC's and BGS's own fault for selling out. They had a CHOICE.

In the textbook example of what a monopoly is, PSA does not fit. They do not own any specific material or production method which can't be duplicated in the market. Grading can easily be duplicated in the market place. It's the fault of the consumers (us) for giving PSA such high regard. This case will be easily dismissed.

They had no choice but to sell out because they would have needed a lot of capital infusion to compete with the behemoth that is Collectors.

Collectors has control of over 90% of the grading market. By acquiring SGC and BGS -- who were both growing their market share at the time they sold -- Collectors further cemented their market dominance.

God bless -- never get cheated.

If PSA 9 sells for about the same as raw, does this mean an SGC 9 would sell for 80-85% discount vs. a raw?!? Sign me up! How do I get some of those???

Default PSA parent company Collectors to acquire Beckett, keeping it an ‘independent brand’

BTW I love how PSA sells 15 and 25 day grading tiers… and doesn’t bat an eye when that isn’t even close to the real time (still waiting on several that are well beyond their grading SLA)

Part in bold is completely false. They could've stayed independent and work on increasing market share by improving their products. They could've improved their holders, add anti-fraud holograms, improve design, etc. SGC earned a rep/respect over the decades in this industry and you can't buy that.

Instead, they went for the quick cash and sold out. And looks like PSA is turning it into a niche, vintage grading firm. And that's a shame as I love SGC.
