Granted, there were some shady career colleges back then (just like there are shady traditional universities back then) but the good ones immediately placed its students into well-paying jobs after graduation.

Several of my family members went to career colleges and became nurses, electricians, truck drivers, HVAC techs, etc.

Seems like very few parents these days push this option on their kids and would rather waste hundreds of thousands of dollars on tuition elsewhere.

It can't just be about the prestige of having a degree to have framed and hang on the wall, it has to be something deeper.
Poor ROI.

I have the same. My oldest has a weighted GPA of 4.5, 33 score on her ACT, and will likely enter college as a sophomore assuming all her AP credits transfer. My youngest has a much tougher time with school and is on an IEP as well. They're both bright in much different ways. I'm not pushing anything with either, I'm very proud of both of them and will support them both in whatever they choose.

Thank you. You are too!

The older our kids get the less we get to guide their way. Just have to hope we built a good foundation. It's really fun to see the people they grow to be and the paths they take.

Outgoing personality- go to college 100%.
Inward, hard headed - don't go to college 90%

College/high school are places you can meet friends and network. Companies look for employees that are compatible with each other. If your outgoing usually you are a teammate. Most important, keep the train rolling.

I know a friend that went to the best private college (B.Griner) in the state. He went from working at Office Max to Home Depot, not coporate office. And his student loan is the high 5 digits. His trait is dress what I want and unorganization. If you show this trait, don't go to school unless you are Bill Gates, make youtube videos, or a musician.

Go to college if it's interesting and can enrich your life and/or your career whether a person is introverted or extroverted. If they don't know it's okay to take a gap year or take 1-2 classes to get a feel.

Companies are more than a social club. People have to do a job no matter how nice or pleasant they are to be around. Not all roles need this. Sometimes hardcore skills are far more important than whether the personality is prickly or not. Being outgoing isn't a superior personality trait. It can be positive or negative just like being introverted.

My wife & I are both in the medical field. To do what we do, it takes a specific college degree and training to do the job. With our college degrees, we feel stable in life. If our employers happen to close down, we can both easily find another job.

Growing up, I was not blessed with a rich family. After high school, I did 4 years in the military. After my enlistment, the military paid for my college. I did what I needed to do to get where I’m at.

To each their own.. but I will teach our son to research what he wants to do for a living. If it takes a college degree to achieve it, then go for your dreams and get it. As a parent, I will do what I need to do to help him get there.

Oldest daughter (and husband) both have engineering degrees from UW Platteville and transitioned into engineering jobs with Ford and Nestle. Both first borns with a "plan" long before college and in worked for them.

Middle child. Business Degree from UWLAX. Pretty sure he has been fishing the Brule River that last week or so and looking for Agates. He will land on his feet is my guess, but doesnt seam overly concerned.

Youngest left college with about a year left (education degree) and is a stewardess for Emrites out of Dubai. Someday she will finish but highly doubt she goes into education. Thats a rough field. I come from a family of coaches, school boards members, principals, superintendents and I wouldn't recommend that field to anyone.

Personally I really see 4 years schools having to reinvent themselves---trades school/technical schools are really going to benefit. Identifying those kids earlier and steering them in a "trade direction" will become more the norm. I think the college "experience" is certainly worthy. I am not sure its worth a pile of debt and a degree that is inefficient though.
