I agree on him having a good chance (obviously the best anyone's had until now), but time is running out/not on his side. Please don't bet anything on it. Anything can happen, good or bad, and no one can predict the future.

He'll get it unless Putin tosses him out a window. Even if he has to trot out there on a sled.

Short of this being a career ending injury the record is a lock, but I remember Carl Malone having just a knee injury and he was "just" 1000 points and change short of the record, so I guess anything is possible.

You also have black swan type situations ie fatal or career ending car crashes/plane crashes but beyond these scenarios the record will fall.

I still think he breaks the record. We'll see how he comes back after the injury, but he'll play as long as he needs to.

Crazy that he was off to the best start of his career before this though.

Down to 20. There is no way he doesn't break it. if not this year, certainly early next year.

Probably early next year at this point. He would need a hell of a heater to score another 20 in the back half.

I am pretty sure the record will be broken before Christmas 2025.

He has 22 goals in 33 games played this year... That's roughly 2 goals every 3 games...

Washington has 32-33 games left...

Let's call it ONE goal every three games (slumps, rest for the playoffs, etc), that would give him 11 more, 9 to the record...

My guess would be by Halloween 2025...

There are still 30 games left for the Capitals. If he stays healthy, he is breaking that record this spring. He has a hat trick of 2 upcoming....hopefully Feb 22nd against Penguins when i am in town!

Maybe the Pens can bring back Tristan Jarry for that game, hell he may have 5 goals that game if they do!

As we discussed earlier if you have OV rookies or limited print run cards you would want him to be a few short and have the offseason build up similar to Aaron and Ruth in 74'.

Longshot to do it this season, but all he really needs is one of his patented torrid stretches and he could get there.

as a card holder, I think that off season hype for the record will cause a lot of FOMO buyers to overpay for stuff

His PSA 9's are already up a couple hundred dollars from the beginning of the season...

I think i'll be sticking with my PSA 8...

There were 2 tables at last year's National that were trying to get 2k for PSA 9s...

Can't wait to see what they have them priced at this year...

Irrespective of whether or not he does break the record (and I think he will), he's never going to be thought of in the same class as Gretzky for four reasons:

- he's not a passer....only 714 career assists (Gretzky had 1963)
- he's Russian
- has only won one Cup
- career +/- of only 63 (Gretzky's was 520, for comparison).

He's the best sniper ever, without a doubt, even better than Brett Hull, but he will never be a hugely popular player no matter how many goals he ends up scoring.

If Washington was Boston or Detroit then his cards could have more value as they would be even hotter in the local market but hockey is still just a niche sport in Washington.

Watch what happens when he retires and the team is a version of the 74/75 team in abilities.

Always been a big fan of OV...but have you watched him or the Caps play recently? He isn't single-handedly carrying them anymore

You're right he is part of the machine not the main cog of the machine. It's the only way the team could be contenders for a deep playoff run.
