What's everyone's thoughts on the Sonny Gray deal?

As a Reds fan, I don't love it, but I also don't hate it. In terms of what the Reds are giving up (assuming the extension with Gray is agreed to today), it's "a lot" according to some but I don't really see it that way. Shed Long is solely a 2B and he's still years away from making a major league roster. I also don't see him leapfrogging any of the Reds' other infield prospects in that time. So there's a real chance he'd have a hard time ever seeing the Reds' ML roster by the time he's ready for it anyway. Trading him now seems like the best chance to get value out of him.

With Gray, getting away from Yankee Stadium can't be a bad thing for him. His numbers away from there are significantly better. He's still reasonably young for a pitcher and if the Reds can agree on the extension with him they'll likely have him locked up through his age 29, 30 and 31 seasons at a pretty reasonable rate (estimated to be around $8-10M per).

It's stupid the Reds are looking like they'll give up more if Gray agrees to sign an extension with them

The Indians don't spend money. That's their problem.

I personally like that the NL Central teams are getting better. Making it tougher on the Cubs. Cincy looks like the most improved in that division. Milwaukee will be right up there. STL is tougher with Goldschmidt but needs to add bullpen pieces IMO. Pirates need to sell off. Archer & Marte should net them some decent MLB ready prospects.

But yeah adding Gray, Puig, Kemp & Wood should help them to be at least a Wild Card contender.

The deal is for Shed Long and a draft pick IF Gray will agree to an extension, so that's the most they'll be giving up. If he doesn't agree to an extension by the deadline later today they might still do the trade but give up less for him.

Dolan has crawled back under his rock. It’s hilarious how he was invisible for years (because fans disliked him) until the WS appearance in 2016. Then all of sudden he was becoming more of a public figure....welp that didn’t last long.

Why would they sell off Archer if they traded a haul for him?

Personally, I like the deal for the Reds. Adding Gray, Roark, and Wood has completely solidified the rotation and brought them instantly back to respectability in my eyes (note I am a Cubs fan, so it pisses me off). Gray being healthy is the biggest question mark to me. I also believe moving back to a smaller market club will be great for him. He doesn't need to be more than a #3 for this deal to be more than worth it.

Because Pittsburgh doesn’t know what they’re doing. All the teams in their division are better than them. Might as well sell off their 30+ year olds (Archer & Marte) and reload the farm.

I think it's great for him to get out of NY, but I'm not sure Cincinnati is going to be much of an improvement for him given how small the Great American Ballpark is in terms of giving up HR.

- Realmuto to the Dodgers still on.

- Rhys Hoskins has a “gut feeling” that the Phillies will end up signing either Machado or Harper.

- Pitchers and catchers report in 3 weeks.

I'm glad everyone on the Phillies are confident about the matter. However can we get this circus over with already?

So who will win the Alex Cobb/Kendry Morales/Stephen Drew Award of the player that signs late, or even during the season, and sucks because of it?

His career was a disappointment, but that year was his worst by far.

• The Dodgers are still in the running to trade for Marlins catcher J.T. Realmuto. A player also named in the discussions in the Dodgers top catching prospect Keibert Ruiz. (Joe Frisaro, MLB.com)

It's mental with Sonny. Like you said, look at his numbers pitching at Yankee Stadium vs. anywhere else. Moving on out of the spotlight should be helpful. GABP's a tough ballpark to pitch in, though.

He's got the stuff. If he can regain some confidence and stop pitching scared and screwing around with his 15 different fastball grips..
