The way I understand auction drafts is that owners take turns naming players, and there's an auction for each one. Example-

Team A nominates Mike Trout
*Bidding for Trout*
Team D wins the bidding

Team B nominates Paul Goldschmidt
*Bidding for Goldy*
Team C wins the bidding

Team C nominates _______
*Bidding for _____*
Team __ wins the bidding

And so on

I really have no idea how they work. I was thinking maybe we could list a roster a day and have the auction go on for 24hrs

For example: One day will be the Twins roster. If you win sano and Buxton, then they'll be added to your roster and payroll

I don't understand how that would work

I would also be down for some kind of auction league.

Here's what ESPN has about their auction drafts-

Quote:
AUCTION DRAFT OVERVIEW
Auction drafts are based on a bidding format and differ considerably from traditional "snake" live drafts. In those drafts, teams take turns drafting players from a fixed order in a back-and-forth serpentine or "snake" format (ie 1-10, 10-1, 1-10, 10-1, etc). Players disappear from the draft board and teams (waiting for their draft turn) can do nothing about it. In Auction drafts, teams have the chance to draft any player they want, as long as they have the available funds. As such, the likes of Peyton Manning and Chris Johnson could be drafted by the same team, which would rarely happen in a Snake draft simply because both players are so early and close to one another in the snake draft ranking order.

Leagues which use Auction to draft are setup with a preset budget ($200) to spend on a set number of players (16-man roster). Free Standard and Prize-Eligible leagues will have preset default auction values assigned to all players in the pool. Custom leagues have the option to edit the player default auction values to be loaded in the draft application prior to the draft start. This page can be access via the "Edit Auction Draft Values" link on the main "My Team" page.

Once a player is nominated for auction, the bidding begins. Team owners are free to bid however much they feel that particular player is worth (the preset value is only a guide). Bidding continues until there is a single remaining high bid (at which time the system will alert all bidders by saying "Going Once, Going Twice, Sold"). The player is awarded to the team of the highest bidder, and the bid amount is deducted from the team owner's available funds. This process repeats until every team's roster is completely filled.

When the draft is finished the league will move into "in-season" mode where teams can start making roster moves, waiver claims, trades, etc. Please note that auction salaries do not, in any way, carry over into "in-season" mode. As such there is no advantage in finishing the draft with any remaining budget.

Say everyone has $100 payroll. If you win Buxton for $8, you will only have $92 left to spend on your roster

I get that, but what are you saying about doing it by team? Just putting up each player on a certain team individually? So for the Twins, first people bid on Kurt Suzuki, then Mauer, Dozier, Plouffe, Sano, etc until we've gone thru their full roster?

I'm trying to think of a system that would work on blowout. Instead of saying "today we are bidding on Carlos Correa", we would put up the Astros roster for 24hrs and you could bid on any player you want. Most guys probably won't get bids

Auctions would be really hard to do on Blowout and not ESPN or whatever other host. I think going by nominations would be better so that the elite players are (most likely) put up for auction first, rather than some studs still being around in the last few rounds of bidding. Of course, doing it your way could add some strategy (someone may save money for a big gun at the end and then misses their guy and wastes money they can't spend anymore), but I think by nomination would be better

I just think it'd be really hard to do it on Blowout because it would require everyone to be close to their computer, phone, or whatever for a long time

True. Or we could try this draft again and make it our fantasy team

That was fun with the salary aspect. I'm super wary of larger groups tho. Would want a smaller number of teams, and/or guys like in this league we know will be involved and whatnot

So if we do this auction league, it would just be a 1 year fantasy league on the side, right?

Agreed on no money involved, agreed on just us. Are you we gonna do this 100% via BO or through another site?

I'm down if this is a single year league with just us, but I will let someone else be commish as I don't want the commitments

A league would have to be thru ESPN, Yahoo, etc in order to keep track of points and whatnot
