Guys I am new but I ordered a box of voltage on blowout. If it doesn’t release for like two weeks I am just so confused how people have it already.. I mean it kind of messes up the entire market for everyone and the value for the actual release date.. what am I missing here

This happens not just in Pokemon but in sports cards too.

Distributors have it all in hand early, they aren't supposed to let it be opened until the release date. Regardless, they let their buddies open some early so they can rush cards to be graded and be the first to market...or some retail shop puts it out earlier than expected because they don't care to follow the rules.

The whole industry is corrupt, but most people accept it. If you don't have an "in" then prepare to open 2 weeks after those that do.

To an extent this is true. However, in my case, game stores that hold official Pokémon tournaments are given these build and battle boxes as a prerelease for the product and are allowed to start distributing it on a certain day. In this case, it was Halloween when they were allowed to start selling them.
So what I would do is I’d give your local game shop (those that hold official card tournaments) and ask if they have those build and battle kits.
These kits have a premade deck and 4 booster packs in it. They usually give extra booster packs on the side as well during the prerelease.

I haven’t been here since like 2016... Pokémon brought me back because of my boys.. and I’m just having fun hunting for it.. it kind of loses that thrill if people can bust it earlier and others.. it’s like when they release a video game but then you watch someone else beat the whole entire thing on YouTube before you get your own copy to play then your like welp.. that kind of sucks..

I’m pretty sure prereleases have been a thing for TCG for a while now.
Someone can interject and let me know if I’m wrong.

Yes there has been for a while. My distributor will not allow pick up prior to release date on Pokemon even though I’m often allowed to get sports cards a day early. They hold true to release dates for pre-release stores and they rest of us as mandated by Pokemon Inc.

Yeah, they can get in big trouble for violating street date. But in this case, it's people who bought pre-release decks, often in large quantity because of the Charizard promo. The inventory of singles will dry up for the next week or so.

Is there a better way to go breaking this? Meaning are the Build and Battle boxes or regular packs better? I’m looking from a collecting perspective, not a playability point of view.

Same here, my hobby store has VV on display, but can’t sell it until Wednesday

You get the Build & Battle boxes for the pre-release promo cards (there are 4 total for VV: Charizard (the main chase), Lugia (next), Snorlax, and Donphan). If you're looking to collect the set, your best cost per pack will come from the booster boxes.

Thanks! I think I might get a few of the B&B boxes for those pre-releases and mix in some regular packs

If you're getting the B&Bs on the secondary market, just be aware that the supply is tight now because the first release wave (for gaming stores with brick & mortar) was 10/31 but the B&B release for online retailers will be 11/27 (most if not all have already presold already). The regular release is 11/13.

My hobby store actually has them in, but I can’t get any until Wednesday, $29 I believe

first time buyer of Pokemon since 1999 here. Unfortunately i believe my parents threw out all my base set stuff... But i bought a couple CP ETBs off a breaker and hit a nice Charizard. Got me hooked and ordered a full case of VV Booster Boxes. I'm excited to rip a case for the first time ever as well. I came over from sports cards as the wax prices are just way out of hand. I bought a case for $525 and hoping i dont get too killed off it. I look forward to the rip as it will be my first of probably a few Pokemon cases coming up. I look forward to the upcoming sets and hope i can make the full transition from Sportscards over to Pokemon at some point.

Thanks everyone and good luck ripping!

Nice! That's a great price at this point given what they're going for. Good luck and hope you pull Zards/Lugia!

Awesome cards! I'm really liking this set already, even with the small amount I've opened.

Thanks man!! Yeah, I’m enjoying this set too (obviously biased by tonight’s results though). It’ll be interesting to see how it does short-term, lots of distractions with CP, HF and 25th (as well as your older sets).

Nice hits man! Hoping I can get my hands on some of this and hit the “chonk pika”. That’s what my 5 year old calls it.
