Both Trout and Ohtani will likely be signing thousands of cards for Fanatics over the next decade. Trout's autos will all look pretty much just like they did on his rookies, while Ohtani's will look much worse. This has to have some impact on pricing for his early autos over the long term.
An auto itself won't matter, what will matter is what card the auto is on.

HR #24 extends XBH streak, OPS up to 1.016!

Such an insane tear he's on now, especially this week!

I have a decent Ohtani collection but nothing like some of the people in this thread. What would be considered his Japanese RC? I see so many different BBM and Calbee cards and I really don't know what would be one worth picking up. Ideally I'd like to keep it at $100 or less. If anyone has any insight I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

Me personally I stick to rookie year in the majors 2018 otherwise you will go broke trying to go way back. Hell you will still go broke. Ha ha

That is exactly what I’m waiting for. To get past those rookie card stuffs and getting into vet cards that still hold value and potentially goin up.

Im still lookin for the Topps gilded Ohtani- not many on eBay at the moment haha.

Definitely his 2013 BBM 1st Edition “Wing” RCs. They are getting insanely expensive these days. His colored facsimile auto parallels are going for crazy money!

Do you feel these types of cards are over valued? Or are you just stating that Ohtani has the largest collector base right now? Basically all the SP flagship image variations would fit into this PR arena. Do you think only SSP flagship and other topps products are the only way to go in this market that will show true appreciation as time goes on?

For instance...
2017 Bowman Mega has a PR ~6k according to some. PSA10 is 1k plus right now. In my opinion this card is like a bowman 1st as it was his first card printed by topps (as far as I know). Is this card over valued right now due to its print run? Are there enough Ohtani collectors now and in the future where this card will continue to appreciate in price?

They are not overvalued if his market audience stays the same or grows. They become overvalued when the casual collector starts to bail with not enough new collectors to replace the old ones. Americans have a very short attention span and when the luster wears off and the credit card bill piles, they will sell. I would say it all depends on Sho's performance and how successful MLB is marketing him. That's what it would take to levitate and grow the hundred of thousands of base and rare-ish cards. If you believe in both of those factors, there's a lot of room. If you don't want to leave it to chance, consolidate up to rare/high-end where there will always be a buyer.

Cards like the 2017 mega will always have its place due to the significance of the championship game. High floor card regardless.

His cards are going up significantly without him being is a serious market. Another MVP would do wonders and if he stays hot, The Race for 63 will be crazy! July 11 is the All-Star game. At his current pace, 35 HR by thr break is not out of the question.

Thanks for the response! This makes a lot of sense! I don't have any high end Shohei cards (yet), but I have a ton of low and medium end cards that I hope will appreciate over time.

So the biggest thing I have to hope for is that MLB markets Ohtani like the NBA did with Jordan or does with LeBron. If that happens and the collector base continues to expand good things will happen. It would also be great if the traditional baseball collectors recognize Ohtani's greatness. It seems like another MVP or 2 will go a long way. And if Ohtani signs with the Dodgers or Yankees...look out. His cards will really go to the moon.

In general, and for Ohtani specifically what does "high end" mean to you? I always thought high end was 1k or more in price in general. For Ohtani would this number have to be higher like 3k or more. Would it just include RC SSP's and RC autos?

This. Not everything you collect has to be high end or for investment and there's an enjoyment to be had out of plain old cool cards.

every collector has their own price point threshold.

for me that number is a number where if i see a BIN, and i have to really think about buying it, it is "high end"

for me that number is $300

The hardest part for me is deciding if I should buy a bunch of lower end stuff or maybe one or two in the higher end.

ohh yes, for sure!

ive been TRYING to focus on Blue and Gold refractors. its been great fun, but also frustrating as i am the type of collector that is used to having a constant stream of mail inbound.
