Its how a player like Mookie Betts can struggle at the plate, but come roaring back when he goes on a tear. It would also explain the current gap in the market between Soto and Acuna (though I suspect Soto's defense will improve with time, as will the demand).

Not bagging on Alvarez - the guy looks great, and he, like Acuna, is playing for a contender.
It's a fair point. I guess I believe that collectors on Blowout are much different than most in the industry and while we may value the complete package, most in the industry are still enamored by the long ball. If we look at Betts, his WAR is actually higher than Acuna's right now and yet Betts prices have fallen (I believe because his HR pace is down considerably from last year).

My point was purely related to card prices. Acuna is having a fine year for a 21 year old in the field of play. For cards? I personally believe he needs to improve (which I did not say wouldn't happen - he could certainly go on a run like he did 2nd half of last year). I just think Alvarez is the first legitimate threat to Acuna's title as the most exciting young player in the game based on his ability to hit a baseball a really long ways.

What makes Yordan any different than the countless other young players right now?

Here's a list (but there's many more):

Juan Soto
Gleyber Torres
Austin Meadows
Pete Alonso
Austin Riley
Wander Franco
Vladimir Guerrero Jr

You're making the statement that people will jump all over the Yordan bandwagon and leave Acuna in the dust. There was a HUGE bandwagon for most of the guys listed above at some point (and still for some). Acuna prices continued to climb.

I agree 100%. The industry is fickle, but a player who displays consistency (i.e. Betts with his defense, even when his bat is asleep) very rarely experiences the same value flight that a player who is 100% fueled by the longball does. Everyone has cold streaks at the plate, but people panic and sell when there isn't something else to prop them up. That money gets put into the next up and coming slugger, and it rarely returns even if the course is corrected. The idea of a complete collapse just keeps people from considering long-term investment, which (if we've learned anything from Trout), is part of what fuels such crazy prices in this hobby. It would take someone like Betts turning into Jason Heyward for the next two seasons for his cards to lose their heat entirely.

I'm using Betts as an analogy here, and I recognize that Acuna has a long way to go before they're in the same conversation.

And for the record I own a grand total of zero Alvarez cards and have a sizable investment in Acuna.

Same here. Wish I had grabbed a few Alvarez earlier this year. It will be fun to see where he lands if he keeps mashing. It would be a shame if Topps doesn't add him to late season releases.
