Wait til you get a load of this latest buyer...

A couple days ago I get a message from a buyer saying the shirt i sent him has a tear in it. So i say thats odd, send me a picture. He says he will later cuz hes at work. He said it was torn in the front, and directly behind it.
So I'm thinking all about the shirt, remembering that I saw no holes or tears in it. Its a new with tag, but got dirty from storage, but i saw no holes. I pulled up my original pictures and saw nothing wrong.

So yesterday he sends pictures:

And I'm like, theres no way in hell that i sent a shirt like that, let alone even LIST one.
So I'm looking at the pictures and seeing that those are awfully fine "tears", so I ask for a picture of the packaging. He says he doesnt have it anymore.
Then he says he'll just keep it and patch it.
Then later he finds the packaging, and sends pictures of it:

The guy used a knife or scissors and cut along the side edge of the package! When I fold and pack the shirts, they sit right against that edge, and sure as heck the spot he says is a "tear" is exactly where the fold is in that corner of the bag where he cut.
So i wrote him back, saying: You opened it by cutting open the bag along the side, which cut the shirt because it's packed into the corners. This is not a defective item, you opened it incorrectly. The bag has a pull tab.
So, I havent heard back yet from that reply, but this will be interesting if he pursues this any further.

YOu are likely just going to have to write that one as a loss. I doubt Ebay will do anything.

I found a Jimmy Carter autographed book this weekend for 50 cent, it is personalized to a man that was the president of the Kiwanis in Georgia at one point.

Finally did my numbers for January over the weekend and after 1 full month of actively thrifting/selling on ebay, I made $919 in actual profit after all fees, start-up costs (label printer, some packing supplies, etc.), postage, etc. I'm expecting better this month since I won't have the startup costs involved and I've converted to a store format so my final value fees will be lower. I've really enjoyed this so far. It's almost like treasure hunting. So far, I haven't lost any money on anything, but I do have some inventory that is sitting, so I'm hoping that will start moving as spring gets closer. For others doing this, do you hold on to inventory that doesn't sell until it finally moves or do you send it to auction at some point just to recoup some money and move it?

It really depends on what it is.

Modern Toys, I with BIN. After 30 days of no BIN then I add BO. After 90 days if it hasn't sold, I put it in a sale, typically 20-30% off depending on what else I'm adding. After 6 months it's get a severe markdown, typically about 10% over cost, and put in clearance. After a year with no sale it gets taken down.

Clothes, same scenario as above, but if it's something special I'll let it ride way past that year.

Cards are on a separate account, just now building it up. Not sure how I'm going to handle those yet.

General Merchandise, is similar to toys and clothes, but I start those higher with a best offer already in place. I'll hold on to that type of stuff for a while as well

Vintage, listed high, no best offer for the first 30 days. Add best offer after 30, don't lower the price until 75-80 days. Never hits clearance and rarely goes on sale, usually I have to be tired of looking at it, or it has to be taking up a lot of space for me to get rid of it cheap.

Another tip I got years ago, don't throw good money at bad.

You sell a shirt for $20 shipped, you picked it up for $4.

Buyer complains that it's ripped

Opens a case against you for a return.

It's easy to get a jaded view of people when you spend any time dealing with cards. But don't pay for the return too.

Eat the cost. It's going to cost you $3.50ish to pay for the return on top of the full $20 refund.

Why do you want that shirt back. Yes, the customer probably did the damage, but you're going to refund that one either way, almost guaranteed.

Refund that $20 and move on, you're only out $4 + shipping. You didn't realize any profit, and now you're only out $7.50 compared to $11.

Again, I know it's easy to get jaded in this type of business, I've been doing it since I was a kid and running around flea markets. You see all types, but this guy accidentally cut the shirt. Yes, it should be on him. But the way the ebay policy works is that it won't fall on him, it's going to fall on you.

You can message him and apologize for the damage, refund the cash, move on and keep listing. And offer the buyer a 15% discount on future purchases. Just be sure to put a sticker on that says something like "Do Not Use Blades to Open"

If you have a Brother QL-700 or similar, it's pretty easy to find a pic on the web to copy and paste then print out your own sticker.

It sucks, but it's the way we're forced to do business on ebay. And the kicker is, even if ebay sides with you, you still have paypal to deal with.

I had ebay close a case in my favor, woke up the next morning to a case opened in paypal for the same thing. Called paypal and told them what was done through ebay. Buyer got refunded through paypal. Paypal paid out of their pocket to keep him happy.

Such a pain in the rear. I, for one, can't wait until ebay changes over from paypal to Adyen. I'm not 100% sure how Adyen works, but it's got to be at least a little better for the sellers.

Depends on the item, but with most stuff there comes a point I will just send the item to auction to get rid of it. I get my clothes so cheap now. Almost never pay more than 2.00 per item most of the time its closer to 25 cents and in some cases less., that even if it sells for 99 cents its not a hard hit, there are times its better just to take a small hit to free the space. Most of the time when I move them to auction they bring very close to what my fixed price was anyway so it rarely ends up being a loss. Had one item around Christmas I had as a fixed price of 19.99 listed it at auction and it sold for 47.82. go figure.

As far as the Ayden change goes, I am afraid they will make it like Amazon for sellers where you have to wait 2or 3 weeks to get paid, hopefully I am wrong there. This will also hurt those who use Paypal Working Capital. I think another reason for it is Ebay is eventually going to be forced to collect sales tax on all sales this maybe a way for them to do it again like Amazon does. Hopefully if they do that they will be the ones dealing with all the paperwork like Amazon does.

I'd just keep it listed. Everything should sell eventually. I listed $1200 worth of stuff in 2015 and still have $100 of that inventory left. Just yesterday I sold a $30 jersey from that lot.

I don't keep it listed that long, unless it's something pretty good.

A lot of the stuff I take down I store for a little while. Bring it back out with new pics and description and list it again.

The stuff we typically donate are purchases that we didn't research and come to find out they just aren't worth listing.

That stuff goes in our trailer for the flea markets, if it doesn't sell at one of the flea markets after a couple of trips, then it goes into the donation box.

I am getting so much stuff here the past few months that I am thinking about doing monthly or quarterly yard sales. When I say I get stuff cheap last November I paid 50.00 for over 800 DVDs and CDs as well as a 24inch flat screen TV and a Sony video Camera that I sold for 400.00 the next day on CL.. I buy out closets of clothes for 10.00 or less some have 100 or more pieces. I have gotten in good with one of the local estate sale companies and get first crack at all their last day items. I have to take it all though so there ends up being a lot of stuff I cannot list or really don't want to do so. So the garage is filling up fast.

There is a place about 80 miles from me I recently discovered as well. Can go up there its almost like going through the Bins at a Goodwill Outlet, without the crowd. I can load up our Surburban on 30.00. Many times paying about 15 to 20 cents per item, only issue there is its so far out, I have no phone service so everything has to be done by gut instinct.

lol...that's one thing I've learned is to stop trusting my gut instinct (on clothes anway) I bought a Tshirt (linked below) the other day for a $1.99 that I thought was some super niche designer type thing that I was really going to score on, but it turns out it is just a shirt for a Christian Youth Group get-together. *facepalm

https://www.ebay.com/itm/263485622584

One other thing, my Northface Jacket isn't moving nearly as quickly as I thought it would. I'm into it for about $72 tax and all. It retails for $240. I was planning to accept the first offer north of $130 but all I've gotten so far is a few $100 offers. I always thought Northface was like gold when it came to clothing sales. They had 3 of them. I'm glad I didn't buy all 3.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/263461642850

*Edit: just sold a $1.99 Patron hat for $15.95 and a $.99 Coca-Cola throw pillow for $15.75....easy freaking money!

Its weird how some brands work for some sellers but not others. North Face is generally gold. I picked up a NWT Under Armour Ski Jacket that retails for about 400.00, I could not get no bites at 150. I ended up taking it down and using it for myself on really cold days. Patagonia and Tommy Bahama are 2 other brands I cannot sell for anything.

Same thing with North Face, it is now winter discount season for stores and there is a lot out there right now.

If you want top dollar for the NF jacket I would take it down and relist around September. If you keep it up it will become stagnant if it doesn't sell and eBay will drop it in the listings ranks.

TB I can't give away but Patagonia I sell within 24 hours nearly every time I list. It is crazy how different things sell for different people. I swear eBay has some way of showing listings to different buyers for different sellers.

On that note they do position items on different servers that tend to end up being more visible in certain regions. Their TOS even states they do this. That is why you may suddenly get a bunch of buyers from one region then all the sudden you turn around and get a ton from other regions.

So it would make sense that if your items fall into the "wrong" cycle then that may be why this happens..

From Ebays TOS..

"To further create a marketplace where buyers find what they want and drive positive user experience, we updated the provision regarding listing conditions to recognize that the appearance and placement of listings in search and browse results will depend on a variety of factors. So, in some situations a listing may not appear in some search and browse results regardless of sort order."

HI Friends,

I'm looking for some advice.

I have never in my life owned a Smartphone, personally I HATE them and feel like they are responsible for the lack of interpersonal communication skills in society today. BUT, are they are game changer for thrift selling?

I use a bulky DSLR camera and it seems that cameras in phones are more than adequate, and probably faster than DSLR to computer. Also is there much added benefit to starting social media?
I'm wondering about Instagram, Twitter, etc. Do those help drive sales?
If I do pics on the phone, is there a way to upload to computer? Much easier for me to type everything out on computer as opposed to phone...

If anyone can offer any help or advice, It will be appreciated! Thanks in advance friends!
