Flurry of rosters moves in the last couple days. Jake Cave (Baltimore), Jermaine Palacios (Detriot), Caleb Hamilton (Boston) all claimed off waivers.

I'm sad to see Correa opt-out, but I know he's looking for a long-term contract with a better team. With Dansby Swanson (Atlanta), Xander Bogaerts (Boston), Trea Turner (Dodgers) all on the move, it makes sense to test free-agency.

Correa opting out doesn’t mean we are automatically out btw. Didn’t make sense for him to stay on a 1 year deal style contract

The SS market could be very interesting, especially with those names

So was doing a little free agency analysis and I think we have a decent shot at keeping Correa/getting another quality SS

There are 4 big SS names, as mentioned. Correa, Turner, Bogaerts and Swanson

Here’s a current breakdown of every MLB team in 4 categories: Don’t need a SS, Needs a SS and is contending, rebuilding/cheap team who won’t spend, then the question marks

Don’t need a SS:
Blue Jays
Rays
Yankees
Guardians
White Sox
Royals
Tigers
Rangers
Astros
Mets
Pirates
Brewers
Padres

Need a SS:
Twins
Angels
Mariners
Phillies (I think they’ll chase someone and move Stott to 2B)
Braves
Cardinals
Dodgers
Giants

Rebuilding/too cheap:
Athletics
Marlins
Nationals
Reds
Cubs
Diamondbacks
Rockies

Question marks:
Orioles (feels like they don’t want to block Gunnar with a long term FA)
Red Sox

So 8 teams potentially in the market for a SS with 4 premier names on the market. 2 of those teams have pretty high ranked prospects (Yankees/Phillies) so not sure if they go big name/long term deal the 4 top guys are looking for. Especially the Yankees. Had the opportunity last season for just a year of Correa and they said no. I think Phillies stay interested. (Changed to Yankees don’t need a SS now)

I do think Turner goes back to the dodgers for sure so it’s more so 8 teams for Correa, Swanson, Bogaerts. And I find it really hard to believe the braves just let Swanson walk but who knows, they’ve paid a lot of dudes recently so maybe they let one walk?

I think the Red Sox are the key to the whole SS market. I’m torn on what to think of them. It’s not like Boston to go full scale rebuild, but they probably could use a soft rebuild. They could resign Bogaerts OR they could just move Story back to SS and play Jeter Downs or a veteran at 2B. If they go into soft rebuild and are out on Bogaerts, it really opens the market up

For Correa, I think it’ll come down to
Twins
Giants
Angels
Mariners

Mariners could very easily just go all in on their chips and sign all the guys. Angels aren’t afraid to spend money and playing with Trout and Ohtani is fun. Giants honestly could probably be in the question mark tier as well because they could rebuild or try to run it back.

Ideally Red Sox opt to not resign Bogaerts, and I think Swanson goes back to the braves. Basically giving roughly 5-7 teams to fight over Correa and Bogaerts

Mets

Need a SS:
Twins
Yankees ? (They’re so high on Volpe but they need a SS)
Angels
Mariners
Phillies (I think they’ll chase someone and move Stott to 2B)
Braves
Cardinals
Dodgers
Giants

Rebuilding/too cheap:
Guardians (Obviously they aren’t rebuilding, they’re just too cheap)
Athletics
Marlins
Nationals
Reds
Cubs
Diamondbacks
Rockies

Question marks:

Red Sox

So 9 teams potentially in the market for a SS with 4 premier names on the market. 2 of those teams have pretty high ranked prospects (Yankees/Phillies) so not sure if they go big name/long term deal the 4 top guys are looking for. The Yankees didn't go after Correa this past off season and they aren't going to again. They are high on Volpe. They have Perraza. They have IKF who they like for some unknown reason but may convert to third (probably will be worse there with his arm ) since we got moron Donaldson from you guys. At least we got rid of that dead weight Sanchez though.

I think instead of putting the Guardians in the too cheap pile you probably should have them in the don't need one. They have Rosario, Gimenez is a natural SS and not to mention Arias.

I knew I forgot Peraza, so yeah I’ll take them off the list for need a SS and put them in the don’t need pile

Knocks another off the list

100% agreed, I will move them over. Did write it all up at midnight so figured I’d miss something.

Is there plans on moving Gimenez back over eventually?

It will depend on who develops over the course of time, does Rosario stay? Where does Arias end up playing? Not to mention all the guys in the minors still. Does Tyler Freeman develop anymore?

Update checklist is out, and it's a good one! We get rookies for Miranda (RC and RD), Lewis (RC and RD), Duran, Ryan (RD), Winder, and Sands. No Jax in this one, but other than him it has all the key rookies we were hoping for. Should be a fun product for us

Each of those 4 have rookies in multiple other 2022 products already (even if it's just Now and Fire), and especially Miranda and Lewis have enough of hobby awareness where it'd be really surprising if they got passed over for Update when we know they're already actively on Topps' radar. I do hope Jax makes it in too, he's been an unexpectedly solid arm for us. He probably has the most rookies of any Twin out there already this year, but if we're counting on Miranda, Lewis, and Duran in Update already, I'm not sure how many more rookies we can realistically expect with a finite checklist that will probably have some vets in there as well - Correa, maybe?

It's unfortunate that everything is printed to hell and back these days, while at the same time wax prices are so high. Makes it pretty difficult for me to justify ripping anything myself, even when we have potentially such a great rookie class in the set
