There's a reason why I'd buy Acuna, Soto, Torres, and Tatis Jr. way before this kid. This kid is more likely to be Panda than Miguel Cabrera. Go look at Cabrera videos from his age 20 season, he's probably 60 pounds lighter than Guerrero Jr is right now.

I do wonder what this will be for the card market if Vlad Jr fails and he has a horrible year in 2019.

It still baffles me you can pick up a Soto and Acuna(maybe not both) for the price of 1 Vlad JR.

Nothing. See: Bellinger, circa 2018.

It will be horrendous for a lot of people. There are people will small fortunes resting on record high prices of an overweight kid who has never once swung the bat in the bigs. It may work out for them, or it could leave some people in a deep state of depression.

Or, you could pick up 15-20 HOF autographs for your collection.

Well, lets not talk about the 15-20 HOF autographs part haha. Still baffles my brother a card of a guy 20 years old outsells an all time great HOF rookie card.

Also, Cody Bellinger is NOTHING like what Vlad JR is doing. I don't remember seeing base auto's selling for $1k of Bellinger.

No, but a lot of people had money invested in him. The point is, people take their lumps and move on to the next prospect. Rinse and repeat.

Oh, wait, I'm not supporting the proposed narrative. Let me fix that.

OH NO! Vlad isn't doing well, the hobby is ruined. RUINED I TELL YOU!!!

That cycle does not continue forever. Eventually it breaks. And it usually takes an outlier (Vlad prices) to break the cycle.

Again, this is only if he busts. I hope he dominates and takes the hobby on a steady climb upwards all year long. But I just don't know. I can see it going either way. I want to see him face some real pitchers in spring and see how he fares.

The economy has been moving up and up since 2010. Cards move with it. I promise the cycle will break. It's just a matter of when.

During the 2008 recession did card prices go down?

The thing is, even if he comes out strong and posts a season similar to say Soto or Acuna, will collectors still be buying his cards at these prices? Or will they dip a little?

If Vlad slumps and say he has an Andruw Jones-esque rookie year(go look up his rookie year totals hitting), what does that do for him?

Will this slow the roll on prospect auto's somewhat? Will it cut down on costs of cases with people no longer willing to shell out more money for less of a gain? Who knows to be honest.

I remember when the Cardinals prospect Oscar Taveras died..he had already made it to the majors for a minute but quite a few guys lost out on him. It didn’t affect the entire hobby at all..if Vlad takes a dump the overall hobby should be ok.

This kid is the most hyped prospect since Harper, Taveras was hyped but he wasn't a universally #1 or #2 prospect and there were reports on Taveras that year in the minors that said he wasn't nearly as good as people thought.

When his RCs come out, it will naturally cut into pricing of his prospect inserts

There are a lot of factors driving up his price:
1. Vlad Senior had a huge following
2. Canadian money
3. His ridiculous “80” bat and “70” power that could develop into 80 power
4. Healthy hobby, healthy stock market, healthy economy
5. And the biggest reason: he single handily brought new collectors and investors into the hobby. What’s interesting, #5 happened without him taking 1 MLB at bat. If and when he gets hot in Toronto, this will bring more collectors and investors into the hobby.

1 Canadian dollar equals 0.75 American dollars. That's weird that the Canadians are spending with a bad exchange rate

There’s a hidden market up here. Baseball is HUGE here and the prices are insane. I am constantly begging sellers in the US to ship up here (and to not sell with the Global Shipping Program) and if more did, you’d see some more competition added to your auctions and higher dollar values to completed auctions.

Don’t sell Canada short, those of you on here who have dealt with me either here or on eBay know that we’ll pay no matter the exchange rate.
