Reeves would have helped for sure, but I think he was a big overdraft - a famous but unathletic big. Bibby was their big swing - number 2 overall I think - and he was just OK? Imagine if they picked Nowitzki instead - or Vince or Pierce.

I always had high hopes for Big Country, but then again, I was just a kid when he got drafted and never went back for a retrospective. Although, yeah, if they had paired Shareef with someone like a Dirk, VInce, or Pierce, t think they would've done better.

I was never really a Bibby fan, don't like or dislike him, he was just forgettable.

Great thread! Two questions:

1) What scanner/camera do you use? All these pics are beautiful!

2) When it comes to the Legacy Collection, do you (or anyone else) know if there was ever a problem with un-numbered cards getting backdoored and then people faking the serial number on the back?

Thanks for the looks!

1 - scanner is an Epson V200, you can get them fairly cheap on eBay, just makre sure to verify with the seller that it works as intended and the required wires are included.

2 - For this year, we have not seen anything backdoored or faked as of yet. However, for 97/98 there is stuff that was backdoored, sheets, unfinished cards and of course sheet cuts that shady sellers cut and sell advertising the real deal. I haven't seen any fake aftermarket stamping for 97/98 basketball, but I do recall mention of this happening for its baseball counterpart.

Thank you! Glad you like. Hell of a stand out set for sure, I think it's the best of 96/97 and ranks high even today. Getting near the end.

Love seeing the Dale and LaPhonso Ellis cards! Those were fun times even though the Nuggets were horrible that season lol

I would love a repeat of this set with players from the 2000s, 2010s, or currently. I did watch NBA in the 90s but was too young to remember most of it and definitely not most of these players. But I do find it interesting that I'm a fan of the Oanini dual action base cards inspired by this design. Two player photos just elevates a base card for some reason.

Those Nuggets jerseys from that time were great, loved the colors on them. I have no clue what they were thinking when they changed to that blue/yellow/white color scheme reminiscent of vomit.

I think that could do well, but it would take effort on Panini's part and with us moving from one monopoly to another and with most of the consumers being total whores who just love to gamble and vie for attention and will buy anything, I don't think there's any incentive for it to happen ever again...unfortunately.

Cool thread - I like the usage of a physical background for the scans (instead of just using the scanner lid open or closed).

Might have to try that out.

Thanks dude! Yeah give it a try it will definitely add flair to your scans, no pun intended.

That was frigging awesome. If you had to pick say just 3 players from the set, who would be your favorites in terms of photography taking into account all their rows?

I still have to go back to check out a lot of these YouTube links, nostalgia overload is an understatement.

Also, bit of an aside…. But I was surprised to learn recently that starting with the 98-99 set, Arena Design no longer had anything to do with Flair Showcase. I always assumed they designed each and every Fleer/Skybox set from the entire decade, but apparently there were other designers sprinkled in throughout the years, in various sets.

Would really love to know who those other designers were. Not that they aren’t deserving, they really are, but all we ever hear about is Jean and Earl of Arena Design.

Anyone have insight into who some of the other design teams were?

Thanks bro, much appreciated.

That's a tough three players to pick and may not be who you're expecting. At quick glance, I wanted to say 19_Grant Hill, 22_Clyde Drexler, 23_Michael Jordan. Again, quick glance, but there are elements to the cards that are harmonious to me and also for the Drexler Row 0, there is so much color and so much going on in the background. For the Hill, you've got that teal colored jersey in the foreground and in the Row 0 and Row 1 you have this golden honey color that compliments it exquisitely. Finally, the MJ has great action photos and his Row 2 is also outstanding. Also, check out the super clear TARGET ad in the Drexler one, there are also ads in the Jordan Row 1 photo...love stuff like that, really takes me back. Even though TARGET is still around, sometimes you get older logos / ads, or regional companies, or something logos for defunct companies.

Runners up would be a long list, but the Penny Row 0 will always be the most special to me since that exact card was pulled by me eons ago.

I had no idea there were others at Fleer, but it's interesting to find out that 98/99 was not one of their designs. If I had a linkedin account I'd check on there, someone's got to have Fleer in their work history.
