I knew this would happen eventually when I started seeing people opening packs of cards on YouTube wearing latex gloves. I thought they were doing it to protect the cards, but I was wrong. They were actually doing it so they didn't have to touch the dirty cards!

Now we have NFT's for the Sheldon Cooper types in this world. Just think, they'll never have to actually touch one of those unclean sports cards again! Sweet!

I just saved the image to my computer and photoshopped a serial numbered it 1/1. If anybody wants one I will sell it to you at a good price, even give you a discount if you buy multiple.

Any guesses what final auction price will be? I’m going to say around $50k.

The Ohtani 1/1 on Candy went for $100k recently. This is a more iconic image obviously and can be bought with crypto. On the downside, the people most interested in Mantle are mostly going to display the attitudes in this thread.

Some big spenders will be attracted to this though and some of those have an interest in NFTs becoming more mainstream. I think this hits $225k.

My prediction on this sale is in the 2.5-5 million range.

As with most collectors, I would - ALL DAY - prefer to have the real thing

A 1952 Topps Mantle needs to have been created in 1952. It needs to have lasted the journey through time, through collectors' hands, from the boy who opened it from a pack in 1952 all the way 'til today. If it ain't that, it's carnival barker used car huckster snake oil salesman b*llsh!+.

NFTs are a cyber street hustle. A convoluted, desperate attempt to make money— much like the rash of fractional ownership apps that have erupted on our hobby scene like so many viral blisters.

Bottom line, they are just symptoms of the virus of greed. Those who stand to profit from them will engage in some impressive verbal contortions and mental gymnastics, in an effort to sell them. But end of the day, the sheer notion of spending money on a digital image of something not owned in the real world— it's absurd.

Pictured below is an actual '52 Mantle, pulled from a pack in Morrison, Illinois, in 1952. The boy who pulled it from the pack saved up his paper route money, and bought the pack at a tobacco shop. That kind of history is what it is all about, in stark contrast to the soulless NFT designed solely for being flipped and traded like some wannabe Wall Street instrument.

Nothing will surprise me. Several punks and apes selling past few weeks for $1-7 million range. But I don’t think that hardcore NFT crowd will have as much interest in a 52 Mantle and I don’t think people spending millions on cardboard will have as much interest in a NFT but it will be interesting to see what the final price is.

It’s not worthless, but it’s a pain to buy/sell with Bunt and it’s completely proprietary (I.e., much bigger risk of it being inaccessible some day). The most common Bunt tiers do not have pop counts and none are serial numbered.

Bunt is not on a Blockchain so they’re literally just images. They’re all interchangeable with no serial number and they’ve no prove of ownership.

The Mantle is on the Ethereum Blockchain (it’s and will or has been minted on there. It will have a ledger that states the mint Genesis and the owner (which currently is a TOPPS account). A smart contract is attached to this ECR-722 token.

The buyer will have the prove that TOPPS minted this NFT and will be entered automatically on the ledger once he wins the auction and it will be immediately transferred to his connected wallet.

Sorry gramps, it's over.

Ketchup or get left in the IRL dust.

I'm not saying all NFT's are going to stand the test the time, but there's a reason why companies pay millions for email lists and twitch ASMRtists with 6 digit followers make more than experienced neurosurgeons.

I’m done trying to convince people who aren’t able to look at this objectively. There is an opportunity here to get in early and you don’t have to give up what you have now, but these will be a big part of the hobby very soon. NFTs solve so many problems of cardboard, there will be many people like me who will still enjoy cards as a nostalgic thing but spend my serious collectible money on NFTs.

If you think the fake card, altered card, slab games, and other problems of physical are bad now—just wait. Memories and physical attributes aren’t going to make up for that.

You can’t mint whatever you want on the officially licensed NFT platforms other than Wax, but even on Wax it’s obvious that it is not from Topps if you take a few seconds to verify. On OpenSea, you can see that this Mantle came from Topps and not some rando.

There is a record for every NFT and if you want to verify the provenance, it is not very complicated to do so for anything coming from Candy, Topps, Dapper, or Panini.

The same people who keep trying to convince me that crypto isn't a scam will now be trying to convince me that imaginary cards selling for 50k aren't a scam either...
