For starters: Once you give something away, you give it away. The fact they randomized AFTER the box was broken opens them up for sketchy stuff. If I give you a sealed box, I'm giving up the sealed retail value of the product. If you pull a $20,000 card, congrats! I have no claim to it, it's yours now. You can't just say it's free then revoke it because you "can't" give away something of value.
I've unfortunately spent a little bit of time watching these guys. They attract the "get rich quick" crowd which is more pervasive in the hobby than ever before. Ever since the recent boom, I've noticed a lot of people entering breaks, opening packs, or even at shows are the "hustler" type that used to be into sneakers, or funkos, or whatever the hot flip product is. A lot of these guys don't collect anyone, they have no PC, no favorite team, nothing, I've met tons of them. There's nothing wrong with it, but it's just a new sub-culture that wasn't in the hobby when I started 10 years ago. If you watch their streams they constantly talk about "we change lives" and referring to big cards they pull as "houses" and "Teslas". They said that the big Justin Herbert they pulled was a "SUPER BOWL TICKET!" Their main audience isn't enthusiasts or people who care about cards, it's gamblers who think that buying into one of their breaks will change their lives. Watch through some of their stuff, that's 100% their angle. "We want everyone to win!" "Everyone will make money!" "We make our fans lives better, positivity!" It's pushed for hours in every single one of their streams. Which makes it all the more stupid that they didn't give the card away. This would have been the PERFECT marketing appeal to that audience. "Look at us, if you buy into our breaks we give away free stuff and sometimes our fans get rich!" They could've easily parlayed this into over $20k worth of exposure and marketing value. As big of a number as that sounds like, the impressions, positive PR, and marketing value could EASILY reach that if they had gone viral for the right reasons. Now? The video has been passed all around the internet for the wrong reasons and they're now closely associated with this "scandal". Absolutely fumbled the bag on this one. Beyond the ethical part of this, the business sense clearly tells me that's the move. Break with your LCS or a legitimate business, not some famous dude on TikTok. I join them with the local card shop in town. This guy has to be accountable or else people can show up to his front door and take an issue with it.

Aside from these 2 clowns, I am still shocked that this kind of card is worth 20,000 in the first place. I paid that much for my first house, granted it was a dump and a long time ago.

Anyone buying that for 20K deserves to live in a dump.

A few months ago I was set up a small show across from a table who was running a group break during the show. The guy was loud and annoying. The guy made a big deal about every unimportant rookie card that was pulled.

Unfortunately there are so many "overzealous breakers" online. I think part of it is trying to mislead people into believing they are "making money" or doing well when they're really not. When there's a BIG CARD in every break, the people watching probably think exciting stuff is going on, but really it's a subpar at best box. Two stick out: the first was a guy on IG live breaking National Treasures College. The box was a dud, the best hit was a /199 Stephon Diggs Patch Auto. A nice card, but a $70 card in practice. For the cost of that box, it's really not great ROI, it's a great single, a cool card, but not even close to making your money back if it's your best hit. You would've thought he had pulled a 1/1 Mahomes with the way he reacted, then went on to talk about how great the box was and how it was a winner. When I pointed out the true value of the card I was quickly banned. Another was a breaker doing Hit Parade hockey who was trying to convince his audience that Clayton Keller was equal to if not better than MacKinnon. If you polish a turd, it's still a turd.

If I promise you "you know what? I like you so much that I am going to give you $1,000." Then you never get the grand. Simple fact is you didn't sacrifice anything of value (i.e. "consideration") for the $1,000 so you have no legal right to it. You would lose if you sued me for it. In this particular case, I would have to see the terms of the sale. Was the "gift" agreed to beforehand? In that situation, the case can be made that it wasn't really a gift but rather part of the terms of a sale. |

So I'm bored in my office and got curious and watched some of their Twitch stream.....I compare it to when I used to watch the local access channel and all the bad shows that would be on there. It's so bad you can't turn away
eventually I did get bored after like 10 minutes and turned it off. |

For being such obvious connoisseurs of viral culture, they sure missed an easy win on the hype circuit not fulfilling the original giveaway. They would have probably easily made up the value of the card in the positive attention that followed.

If they just gave away the card like they were supposed to not even 1% of the people who have come across this would have ever known. They're getting 100x the exposure now because of what they did and everyone wanting to give their two cents. This will probably be a net positive for them after all of the social media bullying blows over. |

I did not see a thread on this, so if there is already one, I apologize.
If you’ve been in the dark on the latest controversy in the hobby, watch the video below. @backyardbreaks pulled a Gold Trevor Lawrence Kaboom meant for a follower on their stream, and then decides to keep it for themselves. https://youtu.be/8N79UwI31LY

I wanted to make sure all sides of the hobby saw this. I only wander into the baseball section and I’m sure others only hang out here. But this should be seen by everyone.

I agree.
If I had kids and they dressed like that, they would be beaten.
