Just saw the price for hobby boxes! Wow. No wonder retail flies off the shelf.

Imagine being an LCS that does a million dollars in sales in each year (which is not necessarily a huge outfit)

You look at your inventory that you sold between 2017 and now. You look at current market prices. Although holding inventory isn't necessarily your business model (how on earth could you manage your cashflow doing that), you realize that you left an early retirement on the table.

That is why prices are currently the way they are.

What kind of prices are you seeing? Trying to get an idea of how much a hobby box will cost. Last year I bought them from the LCS for $115 per. I know it will be higher this year, just curious how much higher lol.

Current prices will end up kicking all the new collectors back out of the hobby once they start losing thousands of dollars. Yeah there are a few getting massive hits and some cards are selling for way more than they should, but how long will this last?
I guess the hobby, much like the stock market, has its ups and downs.

But people know the checklist for the most part. It's a given that it'll be the big S1 rookies plus Robert and a bunch of cr@p autos. No surprised for buying right now.

I guess its more "how many crap autos will there be?" Is the auto checklist 30, 40, 50 etc

I won't count on that at all until I see a Topps Now card with the RC logo on one of those guys. It's a bad sign that they chose to use the "Call Up" designation so far.
Which will frustrate me and many others who went DEEP into 2020 update....

These boxes direct from places like southern hobby who allocates is $74
So blowouts cost is $74 or less

My beef is, the lowest it ever was pre sold on blowout was $199.95 So even cost of $75 . They are making it up $125

Madrigal just got called up and he got the call-up designation on his Topps Now. If Adell is getting called up now, he's definitely not getting a RC.

The Topps now cards having "RC" or "Call-Up" has been a pretty clear indicator to date. I def wouldn't be pre-buying Update depending on any RCs.

theres absolutely no guarantee that those players will be included in Topps Update, you're more likely to see guys like Tsutsugo, Yamaguchi, and RObert "rookie debut" RC's and parallels

I assume they need a certain number of PA to be considering a rookie card or is that not what goes into it?

I actually like the design. just my opinion though.

hobby is not a good investment but i can see the retail as a no lose.(if you can find it)

If I had $300 to spend, I think I'd rather buy 2019 Topps Chrome Hobby for $235.

In the past I think there was a cutoff date. Everyone on a roster by xx/xx gets an update card, anyone after that is next year.
In the last couple years the Topps now cards have been a 100% accurate harbinger of who lands where:
“Call-up” logo- RC next year
“RC” logo-RCs coming in current calendar year
We’re assuming that is still the case.
