A recent big-budget film based on a documentary that didn't go over was Steve Carell's "Welcome to Marwen". I thought is was OK, but the source material, "Welcome to Marwencol" was superb. Truth is often stranger than fiction. The odd tale of Gypsy Rose Blanchard, first explored in the HBO documentary "Mommy Dead and Daddy Dearest" is now being adapted into a Hulu series called "The Act".

But they are industrious. Read a lot of serial killer books back in the 90's and always thought I could never be a serial killer...I'm to lazy.

Well, I'm a bit biased, but my favorite doc right now is Getting Over... but that's because I directed it! Premiered at last year's SXSW Film Festival, and now available on your cable system or most major streaming platforms!

My favorite was Hoop Dreams...this movie basically set the bar for documentaries as it was among the first made and pretty widely acclaimed. Arthur Agee went to college at Arkansas State where I had season tickets and eventually got 2 degrees from and I got to speak with him several times. He's a super nice guy who has done well for himself. This one will always have the #1 place in my heart!
