Gov of CT just said on Coumo that we'd be in better position if we acted 3 months sooner than when we started to act

Um, we should have acted in between Halloween and Thanksgiving?

For those that are pissed at loud mouthed Trump.
In your opinion, on what date should he have:

1) cut off transportation to/from china
2) from Europe?
3) ordered companies that usually make cars to make ventilators?
4) pressure governors to shut down the states?

Dates with explanations would be terrific

Bonus question- on which date should Congress have written and passed the biggest stimulus package?

Not looking up the exact dates he did these things to give the specific dates that align with my timing response, but this is easy...

The first two really I don't have much issue with the timing, could he have done it a week sooner and I wouldn't have been upset by taking extra precaution, sure, but I don't have much issue with the timing of either of these really.

Pressuring the governors to shut down the states really isn't something he's ever done and most shut down at a proper-ish timing (maybe a couple days earlier in some instances but many did it appropriately). The better question/answer here would more be about when he should have taken the national social distancing guidelines more seriously... and the answer to that is about 1-2 weeks earlier and about a month earlier on not belittling the virus itself and saying it isn't a big deal.

In terms of forcing companies to help with production of ventilators, that also should have been about 1-2 weeks earlier as he spent a week or so saying these companies were going to do it all on their own, but then it never really materialized quite like it should have and he was forced to step in, should have just done it from the start.

I also think he should have been putting pressure on the 3M's of the world to ramp up mask and other PPE production months earlier. Worst case scenario there is if they're not needed too quickly they are already produced and on hand, not like those are difficult or expensive to produce like with high tech ventilators.

Bonus Question: I don't have much of an issue on the timing of that passing, outside of how long it's taking them to get the stimulus money out and how long it's taking to get the funding to the right people and all the hoops small business owners are having to jump through right now. So passing the bill is okay, but they needed to do a better job at getting the money to where it needed to go quicker.

You might have different interpretstion of the role of govt but if you think that Trump acted about week late in having companies produce additional supplies...is that one week delay (in your opinion) really they terrible

Keep in mind, part of reason why trump didn't want to mandate companies to make product was 1) his interpretstion of constitution and role of govt 2) his understanding that production is more effective if those producing are doing so willing

Also, to say maybe he could have shut down foreign travel earlier..keep in mind many in the House and media called him xenophobe racist for doing so

Yes, I do think that week delay in getting those companies to assist in making ventilators is terrible. Had he done it from the start as it seemed pretty clear they were going to need to do it, that would be a full week earlier that hospitals would be getting more ventilators to help save lives. I'm sure the family's of people who die at hospitals a week before the ventilators show up would agree that it should have been started earlier.

Once it was clear that it was needed, if they didn't get started right away he should have stepped in, at that point it's a day for day slip. Every day they wait to get moving is every day later that a ventilator could be delivered to a hospital.

And yes, I know they were saying that, and from that bothered me too that they were doing that as it was necessary to protect this country at that time, as I never had one issue of him shutting down that travel.

This was nothing like his first travel ban attempts when he took office, this was a temporary shutdown to help prevent early spread of a deadly virus in our country. I never understood why Dems were upset with that and called him a Xenophobe, it was a political move by them just like Trump downplaying the virus for so long was a political move for him, and I disagreed with both.

But do we know people died from not having a ventilator available?

Also hard to know exactly how many REALLY needed when some governors were requesting worst case scenario #s

I honestly do not know if some people have or haven't died due to not having one and I know some governors may have been asking for worst case scenarios which thankfully look to have less severity of that worst case right now. However, that isn't because the virus is any less deadly or transmissible, it's because there has been a serious effort by the majority of this country to take the social distancing very strictly and it's helped immensely.

A month ago that wasn't the case, there were still people packing bars for St Patty's Day and beaches for Spring Break type stuff going on on a constant basis at the time and what the worst case scenarios were based on, current situation/events.

Which is why I said Trump should have been earlier on taking it seriously, because look at how far those numbers have fallen since people have been doing so. Had that been the case a month ago in all these places, we'd have far fewer deaths right now and much closer to re-opening the economy on a wide scale.

That's why many of us were saying, what is happening right now was always inevitable if people didn't change what they did, so if it had been done sooner and stricter by everyone, the economic loss and lives lost wouldn't have been as bad as both will be now.

No one can say the exact dates any of those things should have been done. However what should have been done by Trump was to take this threat seriously and start to develop a plan. But instead he was dismissing it, just saying we only had a few cases in the US and that it was just suddenly going to disappear. He was comparing it to the common flu. Just more reckless behavior by the most incompetent president ever.

He did what a leader is supposed to do, he remained calm. There are still people looking for freaking toilet paper. Stores have changed their hours so elderly people have a chance to buy items they need before they disappear. Most people can't find disinfectant wipes yet.. Can you imagine how much worse the panic buying would have been if the president was in panic mode like you seem to have wanted him to be? There was a crap load of misinformation coming from China and the WHO. Under the circumstances I think he did the best that could be expected no matter who was in the white house. Take your hate Trump blinders off and look at it realistically for a change.
Could he have done better? Of course, but he could have done much worse as well.
It's so ridiculous how much politics has become intertwined with a national emergency.

Cutting off travel from China was useful but overstated as people entering from other Countries already had been infected in China. Ultimately it had to be done but it was already too late. Not sure Trump could have done much there.

The big mistake Trump made is several weeks before shutting down travel from China, when it was apparent this thing may have some legs, there was, or seemed to be, very little preparation. We should have been working on increasing our testing capabilities and partnering with private business to ensure we had PPE, ventilators, ect. Then a couple of weeks of misinformation, like 15 to zero in days, sent the wrong message to the wrong people. It is great to hope for the best but as President you still need to make sure you are prepared for the worst...and he failed.

It'll continue until people stop injecting the "our team vs your team" attitude which only exacerbates the distain for the other side. People like to score points for their team. Anyone who still plays a side these days is the actual puppet... we should be uniting in the idea that our govt as a whole is messed up, and we should be trying to change it instead of digging our heels in further in order to get that dopamine rush as a keyboard warrior.

And in case I'm not clear: the extremists on both sides are the problem.

It’s not the extremists. It’s the our team, their team people that you see in this thread and the other one. It’s impossible for someone to acknowledge when their team screws up or the other team does something well. They aren’t extremists, they are the norm. And it’s what politicians want.

True story, they are legally not classified as potato chips. They make them that way so they don't have to pay a luxury tax in the UK. It's pretty messed up if you think about it.

It’s actually incredibly smart.
If you can do something legally, to avoid paying more taxes - go for it.

You can bet that the next time this happens the reaction will be swift and absolute.
The ChiComs now have a throttle to use on us.
Oopsy-daisy, another bat virus somehow managed to get out! Everybody shut it down for a couple of months.
