Reminds me of George Halas' comments on Red Grange.

"I was interviewing George Halas and I asked him who is the greatest running back he ever saw. He said, 'That would be Red Grange.' And I asked him if Grange was playing today, how many yards do you think he'd gain. And he said, 'About 750, maybe 800 yards.' And I said, 'Well, 800 yards is just okay.' He sat up in his chair and he said, 'Son, you must remember one thing. Red Grange is 75 years old,'" says Chris Berman on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series.

Exactly. So many people fail to realize this. What do Acuna, Soto, Trout, Tatis, and Vlad all have in common? Look at their ages when they started in the majors.....

Mountcastle has shown signs of being a quality MLB bat though. Adell has shown nothing yet. Just strikeout after strikeout. You are right though, Adell does still have potential at his age.

The True Tale that's come to be known in our family lore as "The Brooks Robinson's Underwear Story" - In honor of Blake's upcoming Topps Project70 Brooks Robinson card.

Background: In 1988, our family (me, Rebecca, Blake, and Tess-in-the-oven) moved from San Rafael, California to Englewood, Florida, surrendering the Oakland A's season tickets we'd held for several years. The following is a transcript from a letter I sent to family and friends in March 1989, edited only for length:

Hi Y'all,

Spring Training has arrived and Blake and I are beginning our first annual six-week fix of live major league baseball as practiced in the Florida Grapefruit League. The Texas Rangers train and play about fifteen miles from here in Port Charlotte. (Blake is learning geography, and when he points out the state most of us know as Texas on his U.S. map, he identifies it as Charlotte.) Both the Chicago White Sox and the Baltimore Orioles train in Sarasota, about thirty miles north of us, and another half dozen teams are located within a two-hour drive. We've got tickets to see twelve games, involving sixteen different teams, at six different ballparks during March....

Due I think to their proximity, Blake has decided to be a Ranger catcher--rather than an A's catcher--when he grows up. His new favorite player is Bill Futterer, a man from the area who participed in the Rangers' Fantasy Camp a couple of weeks ago....

One of the Fantasy Camp instructors was Brooks Robinson, the Baltimore Orioles' Hall-of-Fame third baseman. The day he was here, there was an article about him and his "magic" glove in the paper; Brooks Robinson was probably the best-fielding infieldier ever. Blake and I went out to the stadium to watch the campers practice, and, on the way out, I told Blake all about the magic glove. After the practice, Robinson signed a ball for Blake, and asked us if we'd give him a ride into town to his hotel. Of coures we said sure. Brooks sat up front with me, and Blake sat in back [in his car seat] with Brooks' equipment bag. As we neared the hotel, I noticed that Blake had the bag open and its contents scattered. Embarrassed, I told him it wasn't polite to open other peoples' things, and asked him what he was doing. He informed me that he was just looking for the magic glove. Brooks was flattered to find a four-year-old who had heard of the glove, and got a big kick out of the whole scene.

Love you all y'all.

P.S.: This morning Blake put on a fresh pair of white underwear, and advised me that they were just like Brooks Robinson's--right down to the two blue stripes around the waistband.

My grandmother lived in Punta Gorda and we'd go to Rangers games whenever we were in town. I saw Pudge play but for some reason the first name that comes to mind with those teams is Rusty Greer. I also went to the all star game in Charlotte, I think in '95. (I don't recall who was on those all star teams, but oddly enough it looks like Benny Agbayani played in the FSL that year, as did Dave Roberts and Scott Rolen). I was sad to see they lost their affiliation this year.

An old rookie getting a card or two is still better than managers or retired non hall of fame Yankee or Red Sox players.

How about another Hayes? He is holding value on the secondary market. Wander for sure even with it being a call up instead of a rookie. Adell and Kelenic if planning out more than a month from now. Akil Baddoo could use some love.

Seriously, a lot of great players have troubles at first in the majors. Would be shame for the set if a player goes on to have a HOF quality career only gets one card out of 1,000 because they struggled their first time up.

And...their fathers all played baseball. And they hit a lot of home runs. Age isn't everything. It helps if they're great baseball players, too, and people think they have the potential to be "all-time" great.

Only if they’re first out of the gate. I’m guessing there’s going to be a rush from the plugged-in artists.

So today we get 26-year-old Shohei Ohtani, 51-year-old Ken Griffey, Jr., and who else?

This is fantastic, Blake! Thanks for sharing! I remember my Grandpa and Dad telling me stories about Brooks when I was 4 or 5. I have been looking forward to seeing him get a card in this set and am thrilled that you are the artist.

Yes, and they also have the probable NL Rookie of the Year in Trevor Rogers. Two good candidates as fresh faces for cards in this set.

Matt Taylor tweeted last night that his Ohtani is getting pushed back, to maybe next week.

OMA has a card coming out today.

The Lasorda is HILAROUS. Incredible.

Also love the Childish Gambino/Soto mashup from OMA.
