I've got one table at a 3 day show this weekend in Batavia NY. The show has tons of Buffalo Bills Autograph guests, so it generally draws a good crowd. I'll post next week how the show goes vs. prior shows. I think I'll take a quick look at all of my priced cards again to make sure I'm in line with reality.

Baseball is approaching its seasonal nadir while basketball should be right around its peak. It's the next three months that will be important for basketball and January to March for baseball.

One thing I'm going to put here since this will be the only thread I post in tonight;

I just spent an hour and a half searching through all of the dcsports87 listings that are going to end tomorrow (1500+). It ended up 57 mostly $1-$5 bids. My guess is 15 wins for under $200. This was more of a stress test to see how much I can handle per night as I prepare to ramp up my buying for 2023.

Good luck with the show, I'm hoping to go on Saturday myself.

They did a really good job with the autograph lineup, Poyer and his wife have to be the most interesting combo I've ever seen for autos...

2. Can I generate a better return on my money elsewhere?
3. Does a sale in X years generate a better return than a sale today when factoring in inflation?
4. How much income tax will I owe on a sale this year, or how much tax savings can I generate by taking a loss?

That last question is so important if you’re in the green for the year. For every $1 I lose selling a card now, I’m saving 32-35 cents in tax liability. So I am cutting my losers now and holding onto my winners to sell when the new year starts. If I sell a card for $500 that I paid $1000 for, I save myself $160-$175 in taxes, and I get that $500 in my pocket today to do whatever with.
I actually agree with you for a change, but what you aren't factoring in is the fact that people who were content making $1M a year (tossing random numbers), and now accustomed to making $20M a year. The writing was on the wall that they can still make $10M, but they are saying 'lets wait another month or two' before we can concede to that. Then that month of two later they are looking at $5M and the process repeats.

I'm sure you have your eye at some level on a breaker, even if its not to participate, the viewers are way down, the breaks fill slow or discounted. I'm seeing guys who have access to wax slashing prices in some cases a thousands dollars lower then the big boys....and still sitting on it.

I love this time a year. Great time to be a buyer. I’m already seeing some big price dips for guys I collected. It’s great.

Where do folks typically find out about shows these days? I live in an area that I assume has tons (Chicagoland) but in searching websites (Beckett, SCD, CC, etc.) it's very difficult to find listings for anything nearby. I assume I'm looking in the wrong places. Any tips appreciated.

Luis Robert is a prime example.

To be honest I don't think Lou Bob is a great example. He's a 5 tool player who got called up at age 22. 950 OPS in 2021, there was a lot to like. His entry price was high due to when his cards were released in middle of the card height but better examples are Kyle Lewis & Alec Bohm

He was an “old” prospect who struck out a lot and could never stay healthy. His hobby trajectory was obvious.

Google for me, I search "sports card shows nc 2022". Since I am in Charlotte, I will sometimes do SC and then its just going into rabbit holes. Also like someone said Facebook, instagram and other social media sites. Another is a decent place too.

Should start a thread for 2023 Shows and post links/info on upcoming show dates.

I use a facebook group designed for people to list shows in my state (called Ohio Sports Card Shows). I've noticed far more shows are posted there than any other source. I would suggest looking for a similar group in your state/area.

LouBob was the perfect example of: buy, grade, sell at height! If you "invested" in Robert...you should be completely out by now. He came at that perfect time of price increase, hype, fast & cheap grading. People were ripping at a furious rate while the print runs weren't out of control yet. The new hobbyist were already priced out of Acuna, Soto, etc...so they jumped on the LouBob hype wave.

Robert was 22, Julio is 21...

Both will end up the same anyway, irrelevant in only matter of time.

Julio turned 21 in April of his rookie year.

Robert turned 23 in August of his rookie year.

I'll give Julio a chance to live up to his prices. But the deck is always stacked against these guys.

While I do not care for Geoff Wilson, his team does a nice job keeping this page updated. I even found a show near me this weekend.

I have a feeling you are of the mentality that if either of them won an MVP you would still consider them irrelevant. I forget how many lonely, sad people are on the interwebs.

Thanks to all who listed shows, as one can tell Mississippi is hardly a cardboard hotbed. One show on November 12th at the Brandon public library unfortunately I will most likely be taking care of my wife as she has appendix surgery on November 10th. I have noticed just based on my listings on eBay views are going down a lot and in order to sell anything it just has to be so cheap that you have to decide to bite the bullet now or hope for another crisis to spike interest in cards. We always knew cards were an unnecessary purchase we just hadn’t had to make the choice of eating and paying bills or buying cards in a long time.

Belinger hit 39 as a rookie at age 21
Won mvp at 23
No one cares anymore.

Kris Bryant won mvp and world series.
No care.

Yelich lol
Freeman
Abreau
Altuve
Betts

Barely care about Harper and that's only because he's getting hot in the playoffs.

Lets see from my area/shows this year how much of that was true

Belinger : I sold Maybe 20 of his Rookies slabs I had left this year, last were in Del Mar show. (Shows in Southern CA)

Kris Bryant: Sold 2 of his slabs/ seems no one cares.
Yelich lol- Had 8 Rc slabs this year sold, Raw cards not sure??
Freeman- Sold 10 RC slabs and maybe 10 Raw rookies this year
Abreau- Sold 2 slabs, have 10 left. / seems no one cares.
Altuve- Sold the 3 slabs I had left, and 4 raw this year. Slow for sure.
Betts- Sold 15 Rookie slabs this year, Sold 10 raw rookies, still pretty hot.
Harper : 7 RC slabs this year and 15 raw RC this year. Pretty good for being in So. Cal.

I mean for the most part, you are off on your DO NOT CARE statements. But is not like all the players are flying out the boxes.
