repeatedly looks ordinary now against top flight opposition that have figured out he's actually a very repetitive player who's easy to work out
see the recent Chelsea game for example. You'd think he'd iron that out, he's young and still learning but it's happening as he's starting to act more like Neymar off the Pitch rather than a Messi or Harry Kane, and in the background it's clear as day he has something wrong, probably long term with his groin. It's really difficult to call him the 'MJ' of football, given the players that have been and gone, playing in much more difficult circumstances and conditions. Even Lionel Messi can't surpass Maradona for me, Yamal isn't going to. It's hard to truly appreciate just how monumental the things he achieved single handedly for Napoli were - all while people were literally trying to break his legs every game in era when players were many more times physical than today. World Cup is going to be huge for Yamal's card market. He's a great young player, but I feel the hype has way surpassed the reality of how good he is at this point. If he comes out next summer and does anything less than dominate, I think we'll see a huge market correction.
On the MJ comparison, I see just about zero chance of him reaching that status. He doesn't seem to have a shred of that killer mentality that MJ had, the desire to destroy anyone who steps in front of you on the field of play. That's something that combined with talent drives the true GOAT contenders to achieve what they do. People like Messi, Ronaldo, Brady, Djokovic, Nadal, Woods, Serena, Tyson etc. The only GOAT contenders I can think of who didn't also display some clear psychopath/sociopath behavior are Federer and Ohtani. They both still show complete, bordering mentally unhealthy obsession with being perfect, but seems like they would at least check on a person and ask if they were ok after they'd bulldozed through them. |
