Want it or not, we all contribute (one way or another, at different scales) to hobby trends. Either via website, IG, BO posts. Simple example: if you add the Moncrieff Koch Sport card to basketballgold.com, the card will automatically get more visibility/value. Because your website is a reference.
Just my two cents.
I see the Jordan Star XRC being pumped more than any other cards (including PMG) lately on social media due to the recent PSA news. They are being touted as the true Jordan rookie and the 86 Fleer holders are not happy about it on social media

Buy up something while keeping it quiet, let it out in the open what you’re targeting and then let everyone on the train.

Posters have lambasted YouTube creators for doing it, but it’s goes on at a smaller scale all the time. 2012 Prizm, Prizm Golds, Galatics, Flux. It’s all about $$$ and creating a larger market. “What cards are ya’ll targeting”. Rinse, Repeat.

Some people are generally collectors and just get washed up in the swell, but those people aren’t on IG trying to make the needle move.

For what it's worth: I've been collecting for almost 30 years now, and as a player collector, PMG Green has been on top of my wantlist from the day it was released.

I was lucky to grab one 14 years ago, and even if I agree price has increased by 2500-3000% since then, it was already one of the most, if not THE most sought after parallel at the time.

I think we're starting to go too far down the rabbit hole on this. To be clear, I am not particularly a fan of the OG PMG's mainly due to three factors:

1) The color matches don't work for a lot of NBA team colors. For instance, a Kobe green or red both contrast terribly with the purple/gold jersey. A Jordan green? No thanks. I'll take the red.

2) There is a shine to them, but it's muted. It's almost like a matte refractor.

3) I'm not a fan of the futuristic/space-themed design. Objectively speaking, it's not a great aesthetic for a basketball set.

With that said, I'm not buying into it being a pump. To me, that requires that there be little to no collector base, and obviously, there is a strong collector base for these, and yes, they are a very important card in the hobby. Just because I don't care for them doesn't mean I can't appreciate others' tastes and what they view as collectible.

If you want some real examples of pumps, we have F1, movie tickets, graded VHS, and to a certain extent graded video games (although there is a collector base there). Those are pumps, plain and simple.

The Star 101 Jordan? Ha! It's the greatest athlete of all-time's true rookie card. There's nothing to pump there. The prices are shooting up because PSA has decided to grade them, but that's natural. BGS is barely holding on to their #3 spot in the grading world, so when the #1 company (by far) decides to grade them, of course you're going to seen an increase in price.

Some of these self-proclaimed hobby veterans and watchmen are nuts. Delusional and paranoid.

Ill never forget the day our good pal OJ called ME a pumper and hypeman when I was discussing and linking suspicious 1987 Fleer PSA 10 Jordans from ebay. I was trying to provide proof of the shadiness with those cards and I was the one singled out as being part of the scheme. Oh, hes also accused me of being some poster from HK. Him and some other paranoid posters like Randy. The dope that got his feelings hurt when I called him out for being a liar.

Other delusional posters like Khal have recently called me a pumper. Just because I had a couple of non-negative posts in the Prizm FB thread. Honestly the word is starting to lose all meaning. Much like Troll.

+1 on all of this. I own zero PMGs, but it seems to largely be collectors driving these up (unlike the inorganic Marvel PMG escalation).

The only advantage Marvel (and Yugiyoh and Pokemon) segments have is that they can reliably count on half of collectors living in their folks' basements for life.

Sounds like IG is the problem.

Can’t say/show what you like or collect without being labeled a pumper even if you truly aren’t.

Yup, you're not bitter at all. Now you're not only incessantly whining, you're attacking me too and trying to turn this on me who has zero skin in the game.

Yes, IG turned into a narcissists with small peckers paradise. Like that one song goes:

"I work down at the Pizza Pit
And I drive and old Hyundai
I still live with my mom and dad
I'm 5'3 and overweight

But online I'm out in Hollywood
I'm 6'5 and I look damn good
I drive a Maserati
I'm a black belt in Karate
And I love a good glass of wine
It turns girls on that I'm mysterious
I tell 'em I don't want nothing serious
'Cause even on a slow day I can have a three way
Chat with two women at one time

I'm so much cooler online"

Fits most people on IG to a T.

Truth.

Fact of the matter is, to a different/specific subset of people, you can say this about every set ever made. There’s no absolute consensus. A thread could be made for all of it

Photogenic Shoe Game cards are a newer card that is pretty popular. I grew up being heavy into shoes but I personally don’t like these cards. Sallgood. I think Color Blasts are beautiful, some don’t like em

We need one big I Hate thread so folks can go in and vent lol

And I don’t even own any PMGs

OT - Is it just me or does every thread here of late, particularly in the basketball forum - seems to devolve into 2 members insulting one another now?

These forums are a cesspool so I haven't noticed. I just read and comment for entertainment purposes only.

The 51B Mantle is his RC but I don't see 52T holders being unhappy about that.

(The 51B is a "sideways" card, and the 84S-101 has a forgettable photo. Maybe that has something to do with their lacking the hobby status that a RC otherwise deserves. Just how lousy would the 101 photo have to be, before it's universally admitted that it's lousy? MJ down in a corner in the photo? His back turned to the camera? As an aesthetician, having to look at the 101 just because it's his RC made me bummed out. (First-issued league-licensed card? No need to "X"RC it, it's a plain rookie card. Duh.) His face - what one can make out of it - looks screwed up. Someone provide a zoomed-in hi-res image to prove my point, thanks. What, did the NBA licensing folks just not give a damn in the mid-80s what a licensed card product would typically look like? They saw no samples from Star before giving the go-ahead. I'm not talking about the design so much as the photography and cropping. At least the 117 has the iconic look, so credit where it's due. And the color toning on the 101 is accurate, so there's that. None of this washed-out "red," sometimes-orange, sometimes off-register 86F BS.)

I haven't even seen a Star PSA slabbed sale yet???

I mean I can't imagine it being as clever as those Mahomes infamous pump and dump schemes

I can't even imagine Star or any cards for that matter pumped via world class manipulation red PMG from 60k to 500k now in what?....only 3 years time, "coincidentally, ahem..." circa Cardladder??

It really is laughable

This isn't even in the same league of PMG manipulation and you know it

The only other card I can think of in that league of manipulation is the 03 Exquisite RPA....which is a beautiful and historically important card.......it's was just really manipulated by the circle jerk buyers club...lol.....

Another one in denial just looking to deflect

You must be a PMG owner. Lol

While any card post on IG could be considered a pump to someone sadly, I don't think that's what is being discussed here. Or at least that's not what i'm discussing.

You can usually figure out someones actual intentions by what they are saying about their cards. There's a big difference between someone posting a PMG for their PC that they're genuinely excited about, as opposed to posting a PMG with a post description containing "most iconic set", "great investment", "to the moon", etc..
