I would argue that the Cole trade was also ok, maybe we could have done better, but Cole needed to be traded.

Cole being mediocre the 2 years before we traded him didn’t help anything. I get really pissed off when I hear cutch and Cole complain about the pirates not trying in 2016...how about they look in the mirror at their own performance?

Honestly, cutch, Cole, liriano, and cervelli all fell completely off a cliff...very few teams could have overcome that and yet the team still was within two games of a WC spot in early september. Maybe if cutch didn’t go from MVP caliber to below replacement level and Cole didn’t throw a hissy fit about 20k in his salary the pirates would have made the playoffs that year.

Yup, I got the feeling (possibly misguided) that Cole was not really giving 100%. I know Ray may have lost his touch but I have to wonder if it wasn’t all his fault.
