Thanks for the replies to the question about the Ohtani red sapphire above…I knew the auto was more highly valued than the non-auto but was really just trying to figure out a rule of thumb percentage-wise…and I was looking at the acuna sapphire for help.

Instead, I guess I should have checked the ebay comps for the Ohtani cards directly! Looks like the regular unnumbered sapphire Ohtani autos in psa 10 went for 3-4x the non-autographed versions ($12k vs. ~$4k). Seems like a pretty big multiple, but that’s cool…maybe there are many more unnumbered non-auto sapphires than autographed ones…whereas the red sapphires are both /10?

Here’s a quick calculation. Please check.

Number of boxes = 702 cards in set x 1:4 superfractor odds in a box = 2808 boxes

2808 boxes x 100 base cards/box / 702 base cards = 400 base per player

2808 boxes x 3 autos per box = 8424 autos total

8424 autos / 19 players = 443 autos per player

443 autos - 86 numbered autos = 357 blue non-numbered autos

If only 2000 total boxes as per thread below then 285 base and 230 blue autos.

2018 sapphire thread:
https://www.blowoutforums.com/showthread.php?t=1246536

Red sapphire auto is already $40k with a few hours remaining.

Wow…well that auction ended pretty strongly for an off-season sale.

Thanks for the calculations, they look pretty good to me based on the stated math on the wax boxes. Even though a lot of the evidence and the statements in the sapphire thread is anecdotal, I do tend to believe the actual production was only 2000 boxes based on the 12 boxes I opened when 2018 sapphire first came out (most of my boxes had 4 parallels instead of 3, and/or an extra autograph).

Interesting that the numbers in each case for the autos and non-autos is pretty balanced, though.

Ultimate irony is someone bought a red and base PSA gem for $100k. The base gem just went for $12k and a red (not the exact same one) for $60k, so there is $28k plus fees to make up to break even. God speed!

Also, I'm late to the game, but I prefer the non-auto parallel that uses the #700 image. That IS his Topps rookie card image. I do not own any color sapphire parallels or autos anymore, fwiw. I get that the auto is going to be valued higher cause of it being an auto, but my long term bet is on the 700 image. The auto also does not pop on the sapphire background.

I had totally forgotten about that $100k sale…! You’re right, I figured $60k was a nice number but in comparing it to the $100k combined sale, not so much…

Would anyone like to place a wager against this Ohtani guy? Dude would learn breakdancing if it kept him healthy and consistent.

Some other recent pickups...still mostly bottom-feeding but I did pick up a couple nicer things, and some more of his Japanese cards.

(incidentally, does anyone know how easy these GMA slabs are to crack?)

It would have been interesting if Topps made two equally printed versions of #700 (pitching/hitting) and seen which one was more popular.

Transcendent party cards continue to be one of the best buys for reasonably priced super short print RCs. Tough to grade high due to the thickness of the card stock too. They are also glossy and were packed tight like a sardine can so bricking will occur for unopened sets. Nice!

I think the bowman 49 and Heritage low image represents the hype peak when he came stateside. Flagship always has it's place near the top, but those were the images burned into everyone's mind at the time. Personally, the bowman pitching is my favorite!

Guess he should have quit the last month so he could get Athlete of the Year. What an embarrassment to give it to Biles.

Bought 3 value packs of 2019 Chrome that arrived today. I was looking for Tatis and Vlads and wound up with these nice little second year ohtanis. Gold 1984 throwback /50 and Pink refractor cup card. No luck on the the Tatis and Vlads but I’ll take what I can get! Haha
