It costs more to execute someone than to keep them in prison for life. Plus, life sentences probably suck worse.

Depends on your crime. Some are looked at as heroes by other prisoners. Some require isolation so they won't get skinned alive. As far as the cost is concerned. That's due to the unending amount of appeals the system provides. Found innocent, you're innocent. Doesn't matter if proof is found proving your guilt. Found guilty though. That gets you a life time worth of appeals to find some suckers that think your crime is "societies" fault, and you're just a victim of the system.

I know there are cases (especially older ones) where people got railroaded due to the fact that there was no DNA testing at the time. This is the one thing that gives me pause with the death penalty.

I'm personally against death penalty in all cases. We have definitely executed people who were wrongly convicted. I believe there are criminals who deserve to die, I just don't know anyone who deserves to kill.

Lol. I'm not sure a life in prison is worth living even if other prisoners look at them as "heroes". But idk, I suppose only those looking at it could make that call.
