It’s not about the deaths. We’ve been over this so many times. What’s wrong with your people.

Is it about ruining the economy for old people?

If that bar gets any lower you might be able to step over it.

Hundreds of millions????

How many people do you think work?

When I lose my job, what happens to my two children? Am I not allowed to count them when I say "livelihoods"?

Why?

You’d rather isolate yourself than explore difference of thinking?

Fair enough.

I just questioned the rhetoric. Seems to be the same “fear mongering” that’s been occurring on the other end of the spectrum.

They need to re-evaluate their metrics. I’ll take South Korea over Japan in the finals. The US bows out the first weekend.

I hear the point and it is well taken ... but we're past the point of return economically and the fallout is already a guarantee. We hit 3.2 million new UE claims last week, will get to 10 million this week (which could say easily make the case to say has effected 20-30 million Americans) and every week that this goes on, it only gets larger.

It's so much more than just unemployment though. Renters stiff landlords, landlords/homeowners stiff banks, and then banks liquidity disappears. That's when the real fun begins.

If this were a short-term problem, then you're right, I think we could recover from this and for the most part, be pretty OK. But my position from day one as always been, once you close it down, you're not going to reopen anytime soon. Imagine the state or business that says "We're open" only to have one single member pass away as a result of the virus. Holy hell, those leaders are cancelled for all eternity.

I just shake my head. No one is thinking ahead. I can't speak for what other countries are doing because I don't know their financial systems or set-ups but I know this one. And I am saddened to know the outcome.

Wow. North Korea is ranked 193, with zero reported cases. And in their spare time, are firing more ballistic missiles.

I know one person in my circle who filed for unemployment. My BIL who is 35 and waits tables.

I’d love to see the cross section of UE claims filed with jobs held. I suspect that they’re jobs that I’ve heard the “those aren’t lifelong jobs” schtick for years now.

I hear what you’re saying about the bank liquidity. There are federal programs in place to help that. Also, there have been federal programs in place for a long time to def mortgage payments that keep the lender completely solvent.

We have some programs in place, along with others that will likely be coming, to deal with the economic fallout. They’re bandaids obviously, but it is something.

The doom and gloom about the world economy failing is the same end of the spectrum as those touting 100s of millions of deaths. Both technically “possible” but so far away and such absolute long shots they don’t really need to be discussed in a serious manner.

It may take years, but the country and world will be fine. Both from the virus and the ensuing economic fallout. Life goes on. Maybe it’s because I’m from Texas so I’ve definitely got bootstraps to pull on (I don’t actually own boots).

They’ve perfected the art of social distancing so it makes sense

Well said. Ridiculous that Florida is not stay at home through the State. All these people coming from NY to Florida aren’t even being screened at all like they said they would be. It took us way too long to shut down everything. Not prepared at all!

Set aside the world economy. Again, I can't make an educated guess about the macro level of things, they'll be a list of winners and losers when this is all over (I can guarantee Italy is finished as we know it but beyond that, I don't know).

You are correct that we have band aids in place here. Fed buying $18.5B of mortgage bonds to prevent the very liquidity issues I mentioned. Their balance sheet is over $5T already and there's not a lot of room left to buy much else. They will continue to buy what they can, but the longer this goes, the less likely it will be that they can prevent the damn from breaking.

And you are correct. There will be a reset and after X number of years, we'll collectively be just fine. But from point A, to point B, there's going to be an unbelievable amount of economic pain. It will also lead to a lot of innovation, a lot of decoupling from other countries and we'll no doubt be better off as a result when we get it all figured out.

There will be blood. And I am not looking forward to it.

ITT: People not understanding the stochastic nature of disease transmission.

Public health outcomes =/= public health preparations

Yes. It is always better to be well-prepared, but no human society has ever been able to manage disease like we manage resources and policies.

As terrifying as it is for the modern mind, there are some elements out there in the universe that are beyond human control.

I will accept this counterpoint.

Are you really familiar with the Hermetic tradition? Kabbalist thinking?

It’s not every day I come across someone casually mentioning Hermeticism.

Unfortunately Cuomo's decisions reach all corner's of New York State not just the city. I really questions whether Cuomo even knows there is more to the state than just the city. Its like he is intentionally trying to get people to leave the state. If that's his goal, he is amazing at it.
