I agree that Ohtani Fever will be wild, I regret not going harder after his stuff while he was struggling last year but glad to have got what I did and still holding everything since 2018. The good thing is that Ohtani has so many different RC's printed that you can still find some great deals on some nicer cards. Just got this lovely red 01/10:

I forgot that I pulled this during my 2018 Topps Mini pack ripping bonanza. Only /9 of each white printed that year so pretty rare (and pretty decently centered as far as the '83 Minis go).

Was looking at pop report last night on PSA... only 33 Gold 10's of the Series 2 #700, and only 101 total graded. Only 2 more Rainbow Foils are graded, but 78 of them are 10's.

I have a PSA 10 rainbow foil #700. Pack pulled by me about 2 years ago. Glad I decided to get it graded. Hopefully his ST success at the plate continues and he improves on the mound.

Just search for Ohtani videos on twitter. Pitching Ninja has put up some. He's throwing ridiculous Tejay/Airbender stuff and 100 mph gas. I cannot wait to see him pitch when it counts. Arthur |

Started collecting since covid, so I am not sure what Ohtani fever in 2018 felt like. Bought a small amount of low end raw cards last year at market price that I have held onto. His cards especially Topps chrome refractors have seemed to really take off. Wanted to get some advice on his Panini donruss optic cards since I don't have a lot of experience buying non licensed cards. I went to cardboard connection and they listed the parallels in this order.....
PARALLEL CARDS: Holo, Bronze, Pink, Purple, Red/Yellow, Shock, White Sparkles, Aqua #/299, Orange #/199, Blue #/149, Red #/99, Carolina Blue #/50, Black #/25, Gold #/10, Cracked Ice #/7 (FOTL), Green #/5, Gold Vinyl 1/1. I assume that the cards are listed in order of scarcity. Does anyone know the relative scarcity of the Holo, Bronze, Pink, Purple, Red/Yellow, Shock, and White Sparkles? I know panini does not list odds or print runs, so I was hoping someone that opened a lot of product in 2018 could help me out. Thanks! |

Well he certainly had enough rest to get ready; 5 days since a game appearance I think and 7? since being on the mound. Seems like he would make a devastating “Opener” and help free up the Angels DH logjam a little that way maybe, though the DH rules on players leaving the game confuse the heck out of me - but not Maddon.

Whats the conventional wisdom on the market for hsi 2017 Bowman Mega Box refractor? That card is a bit of an odd duck, since obviously it doesn't fit the classic prospect/first bowman/standard paradigm.
Any pre-bubble heads: what was the demand for that specific card that back in Ohtani mania in 2018? |

From what I understand, they're going with a 6-man rotation so that his pitching days more resemble what they were like in Korea. He won't have a designated day of the week that he pitches, like Korea, but it will be every sixth game to pace him out more.
They've also talked about letting him hit more than before, with possibly allowing him to DH the day before and the day after he pitches. This could end up being the perfect storm for peak Ohtani hitting & pitching. For people that missed Ohtani fever in 2018, I'm not sure I can think of anything to compare it to. His first Heritage Red Ink ROA sold for something like $65,000 and he completely entered the global popular culture zeitgeist. Pulling an Ohtani sig was like winning the lottery. He must have signed late, which is why he's not in any Topps series 1. I remember Heritage being the first and then the Bowman release. It was sheer madness. Arthur |

He also had a kinda boring “Press Conference” card in Opening Day. I pulled the blue & the purple but I doubt they will ever gain much market traction. But I think that was his 2nd Topps product appearance before another mania with the Bowman Chrome.
Otherwise I hope the Topps Chrome base prism becomes as desirable in dollars as it is in hand. I should probably put it under several thousand LED lumens and consider the grading potential for it I guess. |

Well that is good to hear. I handled mine carefully...more cards to put under some illumination.
Today’s matchup is with Blake Snell on the mound for the Padres |

I think it’s a sleeper. First American issued card, first Bowman logo and only released in the mega boxes for some added exclusivity. Nice value in the raws since they grade out so well.

That said, I think the value of cards like int'l superstars like Ohtani and Ichiro is connected to the cards that were popular at the height of hype. For Ichiro, that was the SP Authentic Future Watch, Topps T247, and Bowman. For Ohtani it was the Heritage Low and Bowman Throwing. The mega box was a really quiet release and was not available for general population to pack pull with it being Target exclusive. Time will tell, I'm not rooting against it. |
